Previous threads from you guys have been very informative, but mostly geared to longer distances (5,000m- Marathon). I'll like to hear your about your training methods for the 800m/1500m runner.
Thanks,
Josh Ryan

Ask on the large thread. You will get many more replies that way.
Training for the middle distance events is not so much about aerobic-anaerobic contribution as it is about improving "stamina" and "speed," combined. Middle distance runners vary a lot in their natural abilities, so it is important to tailor the training to the individual. One runner needs long reps at MVO2 speed and just a touch of speed. The next runner needs lots of short reps at a fast pace to improve peak power while mileage and MVO2 are secondary most of the year. There is no one right answer.
The mistake we can make is train everybody the same. Sure, the base period can include similar training items, but even then there can be variance. One runner may prosper on LT reps, tempo runs, and striders. The next runner may need lots of 30 second reps at 70-75% of best speed with 30 second jogs (which means that speed is a bit emphasized but the reps are too short to delve into deep anaerobic territory). Rather, then, the reps become aerobic stimulus for fast twitch fibers and necessary neural stimulus to do large volumes of work later on in the macro-cycle.
I will say with conviction that using multiple paces year-round is a huge part of the success mix for middle distance runners. The amount of any given type of training can vary according to the season and the cycle of prep, but the overall elements remain the same, generally.
