A huge set of balls.
oh darn it... i'm missing a pair. i guess i'm a fake steepler.
Real steeplers run over 36 inch barriers.
Here's the scoop once you're in college: You have to walk around like you're hot shit. Soon after, when you break 9:00 or 9:10 (whatever time you desire), you then walk around like you have a 13 inch cock. In the meantime, you have to tell everyone you meet about the L-7 and how to do it properly. You must also tell everyone how hard the steeple is, and how good 9:00 is and how it's a really difficult event.
Once you master these characteristics, then you are ready to fade into Bolivia...and run 9:20 for the rest of you college career.

Nice Iron Mike reference.
I think this is an interesting question. What characteristics would a steeple guy have that a 1500/3k/5k guy wouldn't have?
Less speed.
Actually, all jealousy aside, many steeplers have great speed having moved up from 800, just as there are some that have relatively slow sprint speed. This is the same as every other event. I think the one characteristic a person needs to be a good steepler is the ability to surge. If run correctly, a steepler should surge into and out of every barrier making for 35-70 solid surges in every 3K race. Hopefully they are being trained for this with many fartleks and strength (surge when tired)workouts.
Use your available resources:
Malmo, what characteristics does a young person need to succeed in a steeplechase? From your experience, without getting specific, how would you coach them?
its a huge help if you're good at jumping over shit, repeatedly. Practice with hurdles if you've never jumped over anything while running on a track before. Barriers are much less forgiving than hurdles if you screw up. Its definitely worth trying if you have any interest in doing steeple. have fun
