Well, in 2016 and 2017 Walmsley blew up running course record pace. He has proven twice he is not faster than Olsen on the Western States course.

In fairness, Olson did run his CR in much cooler weather.

My point was at this point, CR pace was holding back for Olson. Jim seems to be running comfortable but also pushing, which he'll likely pay for later in the race.

He spent the first half of UTMB complaining the pace was too easy, and later...

Cowboys are 4 of the top 6 into Dusty Corners.

Walmsley is a terrible strategist. He is the 10k runner who runs at 5k PR pace for the first 5k because he is running "too" slow, and cannot figure out why he wasn't able to hold that pace for the full 10k.

The weather has been great up to this point. That split means nothing. Wa!msley can run 50 miles in the time he took to run 38.

The important part is how hard he pushes when it reaches 100 degrees.

Mile 34.4 -- 11m ahead of course record pace at Miller's Defeat. CR 5:09. Walmsley 4:58.

Mile 38 -- 16 minutes ahead of course record pace at Dusty Corners. CR 5:39. Walmsley 5:23.

Mile 43.8 -- 14 minutes ahead of course record pace at Last Chance. CR 6:17. Walmsley 6:03.

6:03 into Last Chance, so at least he didn't gain on the CR anymore. Easing back or starting to feel it?

Also, Lucy Bartholomew is 6 mins under CR pace at Dusty Corners.

He's way faster than Olsen in his prime. HOWEVER it was raining and cool the day that Tim set the record

8:54 is the pace to get the course record, so Walmsley ran faster than that for that segment. How is he losing ground on the CR? Is it compared to Olson’s splits??

What about the women's race? Looks like 22yo Australian Lucy Bartholomew has around a 20 min lead at 38 mi. Courtney Dauwalter about 30 min back. I'm familiar with Dauwalter and know she is very experienced at 100 miles and beyond, and tends to run pretty smart, even paced races. I'd bet on her at the moment. Would anyone put money on the 22yo Australian for the win?

Because he was 16 minutes ahead of the course record TIME point and then 14 minutes of the course record time point at those stations. Real splits recorded at the stations are what is important.

You should be paying attention to the distance between Walmsley and 2nd, not cr record splits.

Lucy is going to crack like an egg. No chance she can hang on to this pace. That women's record is a lot tougher than the men's record IMO.

There have been changes in the route, so the splits mean what they mean. A marathon, it is not.

Meanwhile you are paying attention of overall mile pace rather than splits. You have no clue what you are talking about if you think splits do not matter in a trail race. Distance and time gaps are not worth much because you have to take elevation gain and loss between two runners into consideration.
