My son ran his HS 1600m PR when he was about 1/4 lap behind the leaders. The bell rang as he was approaching the final turn of his THIRD lap. He had brain drain and thought he was coming in on the FOURTH lap. He sprinted down the front stretch and began to slow as he crossed the line. He was then urged by the officials to keep running as he had a lap to go. Lo and behold, he sprinted down the final stretch again and got a big, final PR for the 1600.
I ran my 5k road PR despite the fact that as I was coming down toward the finish, I thought the finish line was much closer than it actually was. About four blocks from the finish I began an all-out sprint. When I reached the intersection that I expected the finish line and it was not there, I thought uh-oh. I am not sure what you could call the last few blocks of motion, but a run would not be it. More like a stagger. Still managed a 15 second PR that I have yet to beat several years later.
