This seems like a perfectly reasonable idea to voice. Can we have a conversation about immigration based on individual merit instead of humanitarian reasons? Is it America's job to let in everyone from the 3rd world, or can our immigration seek to find people that will benefit our society? Notice that race or skin color has nothing to do with this. A merit based system would just as easily allow a college graduate from Haiti in, but would block a Russian high school drop out from entering the US.

We already have a predominately merit-based system. In 2015, there were 275,000 H1B visas granted compared to 50,000 lottery based visas.

And yes, people from across the socioeconomic spectrum benefit our country. Studies have shown that the US gets a net positive economic benefit from the lottery program. But, it’s sickening that you and others believe that an individual’s value is confined to only the wealth they produce.

The Trumpists are upset that Sara called out Trump for speaking, in their minds, the truth. Haiti, Nigeria, etc. are in fact sh*tholes, in their view, even though you can be sure that none of the people complaining about Sara have ever been there.

Let's accept at face value that those countries are extremely problematic places to live. Dangerous, impoverished, desolate. "Sh*tholes," if you like.

Here are a few other facts, at which no one should take offense because they're just facts:

- Christianity is based on a lie. Jesus, if he ever lived at all, was not a god-man. The whole scheme was pimped from pre-existing religious cults. Yet this myth persists in 21st-century America, and churches don't even have to pay property taxes. Christians who rail against gay people are continually being found with dicks in their mouths, some of those dicks not yet 18 years old.

- Trump lies constantly, and is an objectively stupid, confused, and foul individual. The National Review, that beacon of liberalism, agrees. GOP senators agree, sometimes publicly. But hypocrites that they are, they generally support him.

- The people who go to Trump's rallies are ignorant, poor, knuckle-dragging yahoos who themselves are, in large numbers, on public assistance. Trump stages these rallies in redneck outposts like West Virginia and western Florida because he's petrified of the reception he'd get in a non-sh*thole location.

That last one brings me to another point. Mississippi, Alabama, and most of the U.S. South are complete sh*tholes by any metric. These states are the proud caboose of the country in terms of education, public health (obesity, etc.), unwanted pregnancy, and overall quality of life. And I have actually been there to see the carnage. Fat, ugly, stupid, Bible-bangers who cast fat, ugly, stupid votes. If it were not for the support of taxes from rest of the country, the South, as a sovereign entity, would be a banana republic.

By the standards of the dimwits in this thread, I am merely pointing out the obvious and no one should get upset. And if anyone does complain, I'll just tell them to move to the rural South (if they're not there already), because a refusal on their part to do so apparently implies agreement with the "sh*thole" assessment.

Trumpists are embracing two separate but related ideas:

1) If I don't want to move a place, that place is obviously a sh*thole.

2) If someone wants to move here from an established sh*thole, the government should make it extremely hard for them to do so, because they might poison the U.S. with whatever has ruined the place they are coming from.

Both of these idea are obviously stupid. But so are Trumpists.

Obama lied a lot about healthcare (not just the example you shared) at the expense of many in the middle class that had their deductibles soar^^^^^

Obama didn't say that when he said to others that they'd have free healthcare among other lies.

Replace the word "won" with "stole", then you will have FACTS.

It's Ok for Trump to say and say what he wants. I just do not want to see people get mad at people or kids that say F...k Trump or tell cops to F..k off or teachers telling kids to get abortion if they get pregnant while having fun having sex..

Anything and everything will be ok because our president can say anything, then so can the citizens of our country can without anyone from either complaining about it.

On a macro level, health care insurance is soaring because we want to live longer and better, at the same time we think we can do whatever we want to our bodies. The cost of Type II Diabetes is one example. Big pharma keeps many people alive but at a huge cost. And then you have the Martin Shkreli's of the world, that jam small patient populations with big increases.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but basically Obamacare took the population from 20 percent uninsured to 10 percent uninsured and put in the preexisting clause. Basically the rest of us pay to keep others healthier and receive insurance (via the preexisting clause), that if anything happens to us or our family that we can still afford health insurance. Everyone is in a different situation in life and has different feelings about the morality of the above equation. I will say from own observations, if you have a preexisting condition then you are all for that provision, regardless of party. And the preexisting conditions are what is driving the increase. But what politician is ever going to tell people they are overweight and need to change their ways? Instead we want to scapegoat freeloaders instead of looking in the mirror.

Regarding Trump's comment - it wasn't his characterization of shitholes that struck me. Haiti is extremely poor. But it was the why from there and why not from Norway. Now a legitimate conversation about immigration and the numbers from different places is clouded by statements like the one above.

As ignorant and bigoted as Trump is this is really NOT about him. Yes hes President and we have to accept that. What its going to be about is the American PEOPLE, whether he gets reelected in 2020 after they have seen the values be stands for and has brought into the White House. If hes chosen again it speaks volumes to how Americans think and feel.

Regardless of who is President, I think the bigger problem is those individuals is in Congress that make bad decisions and stick around FOEVER. Like John McCain. His cowboy stance on not changing healthcare is costing US citizens a lot of money.

We are costing ourselves a lot of money. It's easy to blame politicians, but they are a reflection of our society. Corker talked tough about budget deficits until his vote could actually decide things, then he rolled. People think Obama is a liar and want to get rid of Obamacare, but please don't touch the preexisting conditions clause or stay on until 26 provision.

So if Durbin is lying why have the Republicans in the meeting not come out strongly with a denial? Tom Cotton and David Perdue came out with a statement saying they "don't recall" and the others (Graham, excepted) have said nothing. They "don't recall"? Seriously? During the meeting the President is alleged to make some incendiary remarks that might cause reaction around the world, but you can't recall if he actually said those words. I'm not surprised by Trump's language - it is pretty much in character for him. But the other Republican that were in the room need to have spines and either strongly deny what he said, call him out, or agree with him.

I read it as her defending her children and urging people to be kind to one another. Hardly deserving of the vitriol on this thread.

My concern is not predominately with the wealth they will produce, but in how well they will be able to assimilate to our society. The more easily the immigrant can assimilate and thrive in our culture, the less likely they or their children will cause problems in our society. The immigrant themselves will be happier and more prosperous in our country. Its win-win. Yes, wealth might be a by product of that easy assimilation, but it is not the main reason. I'm much more interested overall peace.

Of all the various cultural values and beliefs across humanity, the cultural values of American western civilization (the classical liberal values expressed in our bill of rights) are a very narrow set of values. If people can come here and adopt those values and learn how to thrive in our society, that is great. That is what I mean by assimilation. If people come here and are at odds with our values and never learn how to prosper within our system, they will be miserable, and strife will spread between them and the larger society. This is the opposite of the "peace" that I want in my country.

Do you really have to say my view is "sickening?" I just want to have a conversation about immigration. You say 50,000 visas were based on the lottery. Is that a good number of lottery visas? Should it be higher, or lower? I don't know. But can we ask that question without it being perceived as "sickening?" Another question; are the lottery visas truly a lottery, or do they give extra weight to people from more disadvantaged countries? And if that is the case, is this a good idea? Will these immigrants thrive in America, or will they struggle?

This is just a conversation about immigration policy. Please see how your assumption that my questions or views are "sickening" is the work of a political correct philosophy that is used to break down political dialogue instead of enhance it. Political correctness is a Weapon of Mass Division that is used to destroy political dialogue.
