Rupp split 1:06/ 1:03 in Chicago under warm weather, he certainly could have run faster than meb. As for the better medal. it was thirteen years ago, when the field was much weaker in the marathon, while Rupp had to compete with the great Kipchoge and a far deeper depth of field.

The fact that Kipchoge's camera lens had a wider aperture means nothing. Rupp could have switched lenses at any time.

You cannot predict how a runner will do in a time trial race (i.e. pacers for a majority of the race and then fairly consistent pacing to the end) versus a championship style race. Rupp handled a pretty big surge at 35k in Chicago. That is a totally different skill from being able to consistently tick off 14:40-50s for 5k all the way with a very slight pickup at the end. Rupp can run a 27 10k on the track any day of the week. Why wouldn't he be able to cruise along at 14:40-50 per 5k in a marathon? The answer is that we just do not know until Rupp runs a fast race with pacers.

Of course he would have won. In Chicago, Rupp just beat the world record holder in the marathon, so he's practically the world record holder already. He's at least in the top 3 greatest marathoners and the other 2 rivals were not running in Amsterdam.

Predictably this thread has lost its way. The question isn't whether Meb or Rupp is better (if you must know, Rupp has had the better career overall and Meb has had the better marathon career to this point), but what place Rupp would have been in Amsterdam.

Hard to say until he is in that kind of a race. He would have likely been in the thick of it in the late stages.

they came through 62:50, ruppy poop would be 3 min behind, that would have put him 26th place or so
