Runner winning money deceitfully

So in that Lou cox memorial 5k 2017,

Kiptoo runs sub 15 and is the fastest in age 40-44. He would have been fastest in 35-39 as well. Was 3rd fastest overall.

My guess is he took prize for 3rd overall. So no harm to age 40+. Even so he was winner in 35+ too.

Petty jealousy involved it seems.

3rd place male earned $150 while first masters earned $250. Most races won't allow you to take both 3rd overall and 1st masters prizes, so they award you the better prize (or allow the athlete to choose). Common sense says that he would have taken the $250 instead of the $150, and that he took money away from a deserving masters runner.

As to the poster who suggested maybe this was the result of confusion or a lack of clairy about the rules, I honestly don't think that is the case. The guy made the conscious decision to register as 40 when he was 39, which indicates that he wasn't taking the masters money because he thought masters was 35 and up.

It does appear suspicious but having never met the runner nor the OP and never having entered any of the events in question I refrained from calling someone a cheat on a public forum. My post was directed more towards RD's as a heads-up to clarify entry forms and websites to avoid any confusion. The road-races I am involved with will get a change in division discriptions as "40 and over" instead of "masters". Good lesson before it happens here.

I am Sorry to all, But I have to agree with the OP. He is totally Right. I had the privilege to meet mr Kiptoo at a race recently in NY (Buffalo Half) and he won $400 there as well as top master so I think $700 total. He was as shady as can be. Something defiantly wrong with this group and Dave's running in Toledo. another shady runner was Richard Kessio, anyone remember this Kenyan? pulled the same crap, and I wouldn't be surprised if Geoffrey Kiprotich will pull the same crap. Something in the Air stinks in Toledo and it's not the factories doing it, it's Dave's Running supporting these Bum's and Races for not doing there Damn Homework.

Races need to start making it mandatory to not hand out money til 2-3 months after the race. this will give each race enough time to sceem and search on the athletes that have won money at there race, and with any discussion can DQ them at any time before sending out money to the Cheats.

I clearly didn't respond to this topic (referencing post from Coach K Hadsell) and have zero idea what's happening in Toledo. Nor do I care. Not in my wheelhouse. But wouldn't he have won the same amount in the 35+ category? So he would have won the same no matter what it is no difference to him. Not saying it might not impact somebody else in 40+ but this seems kinda trifling if it is over the difference of $100. Guy was faster period and presumably will be next year as well.

Spirit of competition and all I get but this is petty if egos are involved over placing and $100.

There was no separate prize money for 35 and over. Prize money was for open runners and masters runners (40 and over).

In response to this thread I followed up with a guy I know who was second at the Buffalo Half. Kiptoo not only took the masters prize money there, but took $1000 for the masters course record as well, which my friend would have earned had Kiptoo been properly categorized as an open athlete.

What really confuses me is why RDs are paying out prize money for masters runners in the first place. Look, I am not going to complain, but it doesn't seem to make a ton of sense to me. With rare exceptions (Castille, Abdi, Lagat, Meb, Clint Wells), the masters athletes are not going to be pushing the top open athletes at many races, and by and large, most masters runners aren't going to travel to a race just for the prize money if they don't think they are going to be in contention for the prize money, so it doesn't generate a bunch of entries for the race. I am honestly not sure why they do it.

But if they are going to do it, it should be an honest competition.

They shouldn't call it Masters then. Under USATF and IAAF rules there is simply no "rule" stating Masters is over 40. In some cases it's over 30, in some cases over 35 and in other cases over 40. I'm sure it makes sense to clock watchers like your buddy, but since turning 40 I have never entered myself as a Master in any race. Not out of vanity, but out of who the heck cares.

If you are 40 and ran a road race then you yes you have entered as a master. (It's at least that way in Midwest). There is no box to check for master.

Also yes people travel to win masters money and it's normal in Ohio for races to offer money for masters. Just in Toledo alone, we have at least two masters that run in the 15s for 5k and a few other in the 16s not counting the Dave running store Kenyans.

Do what i am going to do in my next race. I am only 33 but I am going to enter as a master (40+) and walk away with some nice cash... why not....Africans are doing it, and not being stopped...

I have contacted the IRS and BBB about this guy, and they said they will be looking into it. I sent them all race results as of recent and ones of the past listing his age, etc.

Hopefully we can settle this, and make it right with the runners that got cheated by this CHEAT.

You are absolutely 100% full of >€it. This is not how things work in adult world. The IRS NEVER emails anyone. As a matter of fact the IRS website even tells you that they DO NOT ever email and that all correspondence happens by phone or certified mail.

You're a lawyer? Wouldn't the guy who's cheated out of the money have grounds to sue? It might be small potatoes, but small claims court is fairly inexpensive.
