I live in one of the major cities mentioned on this thread. I have a car payment, insurance, cell phone, internet, my own place, and eat out 5 days a week. I live off 1800/month so roughly 22k per year. I never have issues with money and am actually able to save without trying too hard.
Wife and I were in the Sacramento area in April, and we thought it might be a nice area to live. But looking at home prices, even at 200k household income it does not seem like a reasonable area to live in. I think we get too spoiled by what you can get for 350k in the mid-west. In Sacramento that amount seems to buy nothing.
