I honestly can't get a feel other than that. I think it would be awesome to see Lagat make it, and I almost believe it will happen.

WCAP guys completely take over the 5000/10000/Steeple pushing younger guys to the marathon.

None of the WCAP runners are beating Jager in the Steeple

In all seriousness, it's really that wide open - some random poster here could nab the third spot. I'll go:
1. Rupp
2. Abdi (if he's not hurt he's still shown more than any of the young guys)
3. Pennel or Parker Stinson. Stinson has the talent and is starting to put it together in marathon training - don't be surprised if he runs 2:10 at Chicago.
NAZ Elite guys will be there around the 4-8 spots but I don't see any of them making the team...
Actually I forgot about Shadrack Biwott - he'll be in the mix for that 3rd spot. And don't count out Jared Ward or Lagat.
So pick two of Abdi, Lagat, Stinson, Pennel, and Biwott - plus Galen - and that will be your team. I actually think it could turn out to be Abdi and Lagat - we'll send a Masters team!
The only thing better would be Walmsey making it off of doing nothing but mountain ultra training and LRC EXPLODING.......
Walmsey recently told author Adharanand Finn that his 2019 focus is on Comrades and then getting ready for the Marathon Trials. (Finn's current project is a book about ultrarunners.)
https://twitter.com/adharanand/status/1031872233147445249A reminder of the top finishers from 2016 (very hot in LA for the race)...
1) Rupp 2:11:12
2) Meb 2:12:20
3) Ward 2:13:00
4) Puskedra 2:14:12
5) Pennel 2:14:57
6) Llano 2:15:16
7) Biwott 2:15:23
8) Patrick Smyth 2:15:26
9) Sean Quigley 2:15:52
10) Nick Arciniaga 2:16:25
18 finished at 2:18:40 or faster, nobody else under 2:20.
1) Rupp
2) ???
3) ???
After Rupp it's just a wide open crap shoot to see who makes the last two places, neither of whom will even come close to winning a medal.

If Walmsey gives it a legit go he could have a shot at the 3rd spot. He has stated that he's going to run a half to get his qualifier - it will be interesting to see what he can run in a road half, if he chooses to run all out and not just coast to an OTQ..
1. Lagoat
2. Rupp
3. Who cares
1. Rupp
After that, it is a toss up. 2018 results for men in the marathon have been dreadful, save and except for Rupp's 2:06.
I am not so sure that the rest of the field is owned by E. African immigrants. Biwott, Kibet and Chelanga are not shoe ins for the marathon. Kpichichir and Chelimo will probably stay on the track for the Olympics.
Some of the older guys may have a shot as they gain more experience in the marathon. Aaron Braun, Chris Derrick, Ryan Vail and Andy Bumbalough should be in the mix.
Tim Ritchie had a breakthrough at CIM/US Champs, but DNF-ed Boston (but who didn't DNF Boston). Kiya Dandena has show steady progress and has a lot of guts. Might be a Brian Sell 2.0.
As others are saying Rupp then it's wide open. Some older guys will have a chance and there's room for a new Jared Ward to emerge. I like Parker Stinson. He'll drop something fast before the Trials and will be one of the few who will be able to match Rupp until the last 8k or so.
Am I like the only person here who's heard of JORDAN HASAY??

And ... this says it all about US marathoning. Honestly, if Rupp didn't run, this might as well be a junior high school track and field day.

Is this a troll? He sucks against competition at any distance including when he's stepped down to run XC Nationals.
No one has mentioned Ryan Vail. He has run sub-2:11 and can be a factor when healthy.
Rupp
Ward
Vail
Rupp
Biwott
Walmsley

I would love to see Vail make it, but the only good race he’s had in years is Berlin 2017? with a 2:12 or something. He’s had too hard of a time staying healthy.

I'm sure she will be highly discussed when a thread comes out about the 2020 Women's marathon trials.
Colin Sahlman runs 1:45 and Nico Young runs 1:47 in the 800m tonight at the Desert Heat Classic
Molly Seidel Fails To Debut As An Ultra Runner After Running A Road Marathon The Week Before
Megan Keith (14:43) DESTROYS Parker Valby's 5000 PB in Shanghai
Hallowed sub-16 barrier finally falls - 3 teams led by Villanova's 15:51.91 do it at Penn Relays!!!
Need female opinions: I’m dating a woman that is very sexual with me in public. Any tips/insight?
