This is part of the study that Childrens Hospital was doing - I participated in the followup study in 2003, where they added in EKG tests before and after the race. They promised to make available the results on their website, but nothing ever came of it (the website was taken down recently). Finally glad to see that something was published.

Even though hyponatremia is by now old news, Gina Kolata's story about this study wound up on the front page of today's New York Times. How does she get almost all of her articles on the front page?
