Who was the youngest person ever to complete the Boston Marathon? Anyone know?
16 years of age
... actually im sure there have been many younger than me!
Hmmm. According to the website, minimum age is 18. How did you get in at 16?
I'm sure some female has run while pregnant.
I believe Tom Bassler, Jr., ran it in 1973 or 1972 at age 7 or 8. His father, Thomas Bassler, M.D., used to contribute to Runners' World. Tom, Jr., got in via the American Medical Joggers' Association.
I ran it in 1975 at age 10, with an official number via the AMJA as an employee of a doctor. I ran 3:04 or 3:05. Back then, the BAA allowed the AMJA an exemption on the time standards. I'm not sure if that still exists. A photo of me finishing in front of the Pru appeared in the credits of "Marathon Man."
That new movie is about a kid who ran it at the age of 14. I guess that doens't really matter since the poster above me ran it at 10.
Greg Hill and Dr. Bassler are part of the Sunday morning running/breakfast group that I have been a part of since 1971. The core of the group is getting old now and some who are in their 80s can only walk an hour and a half each Sunday. Many of the 50 guys have run Boston many times.
When I first ran Boston in 1962, there were no male runners allowed younger than 21. There were also no women allowed to enter the race in the early 60s. Women are now running a lot faster than the male winners were in my day.
I think we forgot Rexing running a 2:35 at age 5 in trainers.
holy shit 3:04 at age 10...i didnt know what running was at age 10.
