It wasn't easy but if the fitness is there you can still run a solid race.

OP is right. 59 degrees at the start with an 18 mph cross/tailwind? No thanks. I've been training for 18 months, but I'm going to sit this one out. Maybe next year. If next year it's 44 degrees and the tailwind is from the west-southwest instead of the west-northwest, then I'll run.
Thanks so much for alerting us runners to this travesty. Disaster averted.
Exactly... And I understand they have placed a series of hills between 16-21 miles. UNFAIR!!!
Temps were 42-62 last year
Wind 9mph east....with 20 plus gusts...
and it was maybe 3-4 minutes slower at most.

Solid 40 degrees warmer than what I've been running in over the winter. Suns out guns out!
Not true- starting temperature in Hopkinton was much warmer last year- 69-70 degrees at the start of the race. Only the last 5 miles were cooler.

This is true. Poster above wasn't there. It felt like 70 to 75 with full sun and about 10-15 mph headwind for the first 21 miles, and then at the top of Heartbreak Hill, descending past B.C., we went into the cold wind off the bay and it was about 55 the rest of the way and cold after the finish.
It was an Ethiopian Olympic Trials and the winner ran about 2:13. I think that is evidence that it was 5-7 minutes slower than usual. That seemed to be true for most people, a slow race but not terrible. I would take fluid at each aid station on one side of the road and then zig zag to the opposite side for the second part of the aid station to pour water on my head. I think I lost about 2 minutes in last 3 miles, rigging up in the cold, but it was not awful, just a little tougher than usual.
I think the 5-7 minute guess is probably a decent one, except it doesn't account for those who did not adjust their time goals and went out aggressively relative to the conditions and then blew up. I didn't race last year, but watched that phenomenon unfold with plenty of runners that I know (most of them experienced at that).

+1. The shirt stays in Hopkinton this year.

Agreed!
I thought I was in shape for 3:15, but instead of trying to run 1:35/1:40, I went out in 1:38 and did 3:17:35, and was quite pleased.
This year I think I'm ready for 3:05. Cool and a tailwind, I'll try to settle in at 7;00 pace, but if it's hot, maybe 7:15 and see how it goes.
I went out casual and didn't get to hot... the wind was pretty annoying around mile 18-26....
Just be sure to stay under defcon 1 pace and it looks decent. I ran a pr despite the heat but honestly I don't think the heat was a major issue. The last 6 miles I was cold and couldn't run a fast pace to save my life. Quads were blown

My experience was similar to yours. I held up well in the heat and hills and even picked it up slightly coming down from BC into Cleveland Circle but after the turn onto Beacon the headwind and cooler air really slowed me and my quads were too trashed to maintain pace.
Just calling it now I'm gonna crush it regardless of weather.
I'll adjust and find a way... I don't need a perfect world to kick ass.
While I am too much of a wimp to temp the fates like this, I genuinely love this post.I wouldn't be all that worked up about a moderately warm day. As a Floridian, I feel like the heat would give me a tiny competitive advantage to offset the disadvantage that comes from training in the flattest state in the country.

The warmth is perfect for you Floridians to wear your favorite jean shorts.
Coming from Arizona, 65 will be a nice cool day.
Unfortunately, my jorts chafe too much for race day. Found that out the hard way.

I've learned that I suck racing in the heat, especially at my post-collegiate girth, but I am not going to complain about the conditions because they don't suit me personally. The "heat" in the forecast looks moderate and so I'll just adjust my goal by a couple minutes at the start.
