Rumor is that he gained more like 3+ min on him once they hit the flats...

Irunfar had him 60 seconds behind Max and 30 seconds behind Sage at the last aid station with 6.8 miles to go. At one point in the race, he was 3 minutes behind but that was after most of the climbing had been done. He had been gaining time pretty quickly the last 10 miles of the race.
Sage's stride has gotten worse and worse - Max and Hayden have far superior biomechanical efficiency. Bummer Sage continues to live in Max's shadow ...
Sage's deterioration late in races is classic with many vegans. He is not building the protein and fat stores necessary to fuel late in the race. It got him by the last few years, and his muscular strength continues to get him by now, but to be great he needs to be like Max and Kilian and eat a freaking steak with some beer every once in a while. Did you all watch that Jenny Simpson documentary and that 2lb slab of filet she eats weekly, pure blood and meat for iron and protein? That's what Sage needs. Some real food.
Was this a men's only race?

You really have no idea what you are talking about. Seriously.

I think it has more to do with his racing so frequently the last few years and his low train I g mileage relative to what many of the other top guys are putting in. He's going out too hard because he's racing to win and fading as a result. While he's recently been increasing his mileage, it takes time to reap the results....He's still running at a high level but the margin for error is slimmer with younger and faster guys on the scene. Plus, Max is in top shape right now. Notice how he hasn't done a lot of 50+ mile races recently and how he mixes in shorter races??
Mostly likely this. Sage just raced a hilly 10hr 100k in January. Max ran xc and 50km races. He is very fit.
My theory. .. wrote:

Yeah I saw that King was at Xc, alot of trail guys were there. Joe Gray dominated the trail fellas tho, would have been nice to see him focus on ultra and race with max in this. Gray gets little credit for his dominance in mountain running. In the 5k-32k range it seems he crushes max, hayden and the rest. Someone talk him into doing more ultras please!
Sage just raced Joe head to head at the Moab Trail Marathon this past November and beat him.Max gets beat at 50-mile distances by guys like Zach Miller all the time. Could Joe take on Hayden and Zach at North Face? Maybe.

Yeah I was there in moab. Sage ran am amazing race but I gotta say gray was bruised pretty bad the day before race on his quad. He ran into a branch or something. I've come into a trail race with a hurt quad and let me tell you, downhills never hurt so bad. I do think if he focused on the longer stuff he'd easily beat those guys. Look at how he has done on true mountain courses, I'd say streamlining the training toward longer instead of rugged would be easy transition for him since he already has more speed than those guys both on mountain terrain and flat races like xc and road..??

Gray gets a TON of credit for his dominance in mountain running. Who is the top American mountain runner? Joe Gray. Everyone will say that. He can win Mt Washington in an all uphill battle and he can win the championships in a 3 lap up/down course. Why the heck would he go and do ultras when he knows exactly what his sweet spot is and there's so much more skill in the 10k-32k distance?

Last 8ish miles were pretty ridiculous for both. Looks like Hayden closed faster.
how tall is Max King? he looks like a dwarf in that pic
I think he's standing 10 feet behind the other guys. He's about 6'1".
