For a couple years now, I have been working my way up to being a high mileage runner. My freshman year of college I held 90 for about 4 months of base phase, and averaged no lower that 75 for the whole year, to give you an idea of about where my training was at. So this spring, in a new program, I have been cut back to about 60 a week (with the plan being to have me at 45 for the last half of the track season), and my workouts have gone from say 5-7 miles worth of repeats, intervals, "whatever" down to about 2.5-4 miles. I have just been really frustrated with the whole thing. I feel like not only do I not know how to effectively use this low mileage, but that it is going to have a negative impact on my development in the long term. But if I have slow pr's of say 4:40 for the mile, I guess it could be necessary to work on that type of basic speed? My ambition is to be a 10k runner, and with a pr of 33:36, maybe I was nearing a plateau if I don’t develop faster times in events like the mile and 3k? I am really trying to justify letting my mileage get cut down like it has been, and I would really benefit from hearing any stories or advice from people who have effectively made this type of transition. I feel like I am being challenged to learn how to train all over again, and I just cant get comfortable with that idea.
