what seems to work best for people? i have seen a few out there and am not clear on which method is the best to use...especially for an old fart like myself.
thanks.

First go to a Snoop Dog concert and get really drunk. Then go streaking and when your wife approaches in a car, run as fast as you can. Take your heart rate and that is the true maximu.
Or alternatively, run 2 flat out 800's on the track. If you have a HRM check it right after you finish the last 20m of the 2nd one - if you run yourself into the ground, you'll max out that way.
As a Master, my favorite method is to wear a heart rate monitor for a 5K race and really push it the last 400-800m and see what the heart rate is when you cross the finish. The above 800m method works put has a greater risk of injury for me.
You can only get within a few beats of max at the end of a 5K due to heart fatigue and drift. Whatever you get, I can assure you that you are still a few beats off (maybe 4 or 5) of true max.

Nope.
I've seen my max at the end of a 5k that finishes with a balls-to-the-wall sprint.
Can't ever seem to get there on shorter races, and rarely on longer races, but the 5k distance seems to be the ticket, for me anyway.
