Kilgore,
I hate to break it to you but there is a world beyond 49º 23'N, 25º 7'N, 66º 57'W, 124º 44'W. Honestly there is.

let's call this for what it is: a long walk. i'm open to debate over what constitutes "running", but 16:00 pace is damn slow for a run. i can comfortably walk that fast with no problems. to look at it another way, you can imagine she ran some "faster" miles in there, say at 12:00 pace, perhaps? for every 12:00 mile she ran, she'd also have to "run" a 20:00 mile to get her average to that 16:00 pace. that's a friggin' crawl.
congrats to Pam on her 300 mile walk. staying awake and walking for 80 hours is impressive.
Dean Karnazes has pretty much killed whatever interest I had in ultras.
Out.

Exactly, I am pretty damn sure I could not do such a walk-run if I ever decided to try. Probably would die. I don't think I could even stay up 80 hours just hanging out. Nor would I ever want to try it. There's lots of stuff I could never do but would not want to. Didn't some guy eat an entire bicycle?? I think he did. He broke it all into small parts, cooked them in pies or something, and ate them. NUTS! Hard to do for sure too. Am I impressed? Sort of, I guess, in a sick way.
But I too can compete at this twisted-feat/freak-show-stunt thing. I am going to puch myself in the face 1,000,000,000,000,000 times in a row. I bet you Ali could never have done that in his prime. OK, maybe that does not prove I am a better boxer than Ali, but it does not prove that I am NOT better than him either. Apples and oranges. And we can't say for sure if Ali could have ever been as good as me in "self-face-punching." Think about it, you gotta stay awake a looooong time to hit yourself that much. And it takes toughness too. I probably will end up with a lot of bruises, and a hurt hand, so don't understimate my accomplishment.
Nobby, if I do this "feat", will you come on here and defend me as being "great" ? I think you should, I really do.
(and as far as the pace Pam ran, she started off resonably fast, but then many of her miles were run at EIGHTEEN- NINETEEN minutes per mile. Check her splits. That's a very slow walk. I still almost certainly could not do what she did......nor could I eat that bicycle. But I CAN punch myself in the face a lot. So I guess the only conclusion we can all reach is: there are a lot of crazy, crazy people out there trying to impress others and themselves. Looks like I am about to become one of them. Here goes nothing.......
Ouch........Ouch........Ouch........Ouch.........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch (damn this is boring.....but I want Nobby's respect, and dammit, I am just no good at real boxing. Oh well, THIS is where I will make my mark!)....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch......(huh, nose-bleed.......that's not so bad. C'mon man, stay focused, Nobby will never defend you if you give up. KEEP PUNCHING!)........Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......OuchOuch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.....Ouch......Ouch........Ouch.......Ouch.......Ouch.........ETC, ETC, ETC.....STAY TUNED FOR MY RECORD!)
No. But I would criticize you for it either. Nor have I ever said that Pam was "great", only that you should respect her achievement.
This is what I don't understand, here is a woman who obviously doesn't have a great deal of talent at your sport, but when she achieves something in her sport, you feel threatened enough to want to insult her.
She is the race director for the Tucson Marathon - allowing you to showcase your moderate talents and I'd be willing to bet she wouldn't go to Ultramarathon World and snipe at your pathetic attempts.
The sad fact is that Pam's "achievement" isn't all that great. Sue Ellen Trapp ran 234.81 miles in 48 hours in '97. However, that's not really the point is it? The point is that, just because you don't like a sport, you don't have to insult someone who has achieved something in it, especially someone who spends a considerable part of her life devoted to your sport.
Insulting another athlete doesn't make you look like a man, it just shows that you are an insecure little boy.
I took non-stop to mean that she didn't stop to rest or sleep. Regardless, I think she's pretty gutsy
here you go bob the nob...
click on the link.. and you'll find that St. George is one of the fastest marathon... it is no coincident that Pammy ran who pr on that course..
BWAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
loser! who has no clue
Oh and while you are sulking please have the decency to correct my grammar.
Thank you
Are there WELL-DOCUMENTED records of performances and times in these ancient "ultra-runs" to which we can compare today's times??
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. Comrades has been 56 miles since before Boston was 26.2 and gets more than 12,000 starters every year. Ever heard of Arthur Newton? London to Brighton has been going for 55 years.
"World Records" for ultra distances have been kept since the 1800's. Ever heard of the "Astley Belt" races? Six day races first held in 1879. What about Captain Barclay (64 miles in 10 hours 1802)? George Cartwright? Emil Antoine? Carl Brockmann? Harold Ross? Donato Pavesi? Hardy Ballington? Wally Hayward? Why don't you do some homework before you show yourself to be a complete dumbarse?

?????
I believe that the closest thing to a 300 mile record may be Charlie Rowell, and this was the start of a six day race!

indoors
60:32:00x+ Charlie Rowell (ENG)
New York NY, USA 1 Mar 1882
notes
60:32:00x+i Rowell - time at 311 miles (500.505 kilometres)
At this time being a manual worker would probably get you thrown out of amateur T&F. The serious professionl runners were ultra distance men.
It's exceptionally funny that Runner's World is reviled and dismised on this board unless they happen to agree with whatever point you are trying to make. Next thing you'll be telling us that Jeff Galloway was right all along. If I had to choose a rating system to compare marathons, I'd think that the Association Of Road Racing Statisticians might be a smidge more believable than Runner's World:

Keep trying, you might make a case one day. Right about the time you break the marathon World Record. Clueless loser.
Oh really..................?
Here's the actual link and I don't see St. George????
oops!
need to reset link...
try this baby!
Yep no St. George on that list...
I'm waitng for a reply.....
Sorry it took me so long, I have a life.
You realize that bias is from 1999... and not current
Yep, like I said you're a loser... and how dare you forged that entry into the orginal list that I linked...
Do us all a favor and go crawl under a rock..
actually, the "issue" is the same with everything else. too many people are impressed by quantity, not quality.
it's alot harder to run a 2:10 marathon than 300 miles. does any 2:10 marathoner get a miniscule fraction of the attention that reed/karnazes are getting for staying up all night and walking?
And to continue your logic, it's a lot harder to run a sub 10 second 100 meters than 2:10 marathon so those guys must be the most revered runners in the world?
It's all hard - who is to say any one is harder than the other.
I do realize that bias is from 1999. Can you show in detail how it would have changed? Did erosion cause a significant change in the elevation of Veyo Hill?
I didn't dare anything, I just amalgamated 2 sets of data, you pompous git.
Do me a favour and join Prance-a-lot in his record face punching attempt. Wanker.
Any list that says that Boston is an easier/faster course than Chicago is out to lunch. No way, no how.
(am I reading the list correctly??? If that is what it says, the list is meaningless. And for you to not realize that shows how little you know about the marathon)
