Quick test (don't cheat): who won bronze in men's 2012 or 2008 olympic marathon? By next olympics no one will barely remember who got bronze in Rio, but if Galen had won today everyone would remember. For cryin' out loud, people are STILL talking about Meb's 2009 win in NYC. Look at this headline from 2 days ago:
http://running.competitor.com/2016/11/new-york-city-marathon/2009-nyc-marathon-champ-meb-keflezighi-ponders-life-after-running_158333It sure doesn't refer to his olympic medal...
I'd take a win in NYC over an olympic bronze in a heartbeat.
Sounds like Galen is going to spend one more year on the track during summer 2017. Might finally see him in NYC next year, or Boston 2018.
I know Meb won a silver in Athens. I think winning NYC is a bigger deal than bronze at the Olympics on paper, but that awards "ceremony" was so sad compared to the Olympics. Some half-hearted clapping, a family coming out in parkas holding their kids to present the winning silver plate.
At the Olympics, even for the bronze, Rupp was out in front of all the nations with every single athlete at the Closing Ceremonies watching the men's medal ceremony. It was pretty majestic.
