It doesn't matter what type of runner you are, most HSA plans cover massage but read the fine print.

Massage can be a covered medical expense if it is prescribed by a Dr as a medical need.
I had my Sports Med Dr write me one a few years ago but never actually used it.
Google it to double check. It is not up to your employer, HSA expenses are mandated by IRS regulations.

Check the requirements of your plan. I have been getting reimbursed for massage with my HSA for several years now and i don't have a referral from my doctor.
