Two races within a three week period stick out to me as my best/favorite.
Conference Chamionship 3k during my senior year of HS. I went in as the favorite by ~8 seconds; I knew that some of the other runners were in shape to PR so I was a bit scared but still very confident in myself. We went out in 69 and settled in to 71/72s for most of the race. I kept on the outside of lane 1, behind the leader. I remember being incredibly relaxed and smooth, just waiting to lay it all out there. 600 to go I get on the side of the leader and start to wind up - took the lead at 500 and started my sprint with 400 to go. Closed in 63-high to run a 7 second PR of 8:43. 2nd place was 5 seconds back. Cooling down with the other runners the 3rd place guy said "... And then I looked up and thought 'you are a god' ..." . Probably the happiest I have been after any race ever.
Next week I ran in the state meet, took 6th. I thought I could have done better but just didn't have "it" that day.
The following week I wanted to take a shot at my HS's record so I found a 3k that a few studs were running. This was the day after prom night so despite being in great shape I felt a little flat. We went out pretty hard, 2:52 at 1k, 5:43 at 2k where I took the lead and "died the least" to run 8:43.05 again. The school record was 8:42.8 so I was really bummed but still happy as I beat a couple kids who I thought were untouchable earlier that year.
That capped off my favorite season of track or XC (so far) where I made jumps I never would have expected.
