Competitive gaming will be in the Olympics someday. There is probably already a bigger following of eSports than track and field. And it's the younger generation (aka the future).
There's a disconnect still between the perception that it's just a game and the reality that it takes real skill to be at the top. Like any other endeavor.
FPS games for instance, require exceptional perception and hand-eye coordination. It is immediately obvious whether or not a player has what it takes. The ability to see a 3D world for instance, and to be able think about that volume of space and how to exploit it is impressive.
The issue is like any other schmuck kid that thinks they are the next Barry Sanders / Barry Bonds / Michael Jordan ... they like doing it and think if they practice enough they will make it.
Not true.
All that said, it's a waste of time. But there is real skill, and it will be the 21st century sport once all is said and done.
