US getting special treatment; what else is new?
I've never heard of anything like this.
It works because they pick the final on place (Q) and time (q).
If it was straight Q, like top 4, you couldn't do it.
Shouldn't hey have had Abby do a re run of her 5000 to see if she could beat the best q time to make the final?
I'm not sure how many people on this thread actually watched the race or saw the Slo-mo replay as I have but it's crystal clear the Brazilian interfered with Felix: she came into Felix's lane and hit her arm just prior to her handoff. Felix is knocked off of rythm and suspect she throws the baton because she's past exchange zone or next runner is out of reach. No question Brazil should be DQ'd and US DQ should be overturned.

Cost and efficiency. 100 and 110H have a lot of heats since you can only go one per lane. If you have 27 runners you can run them all in three heats rather than 4. It costs a lot more to extend that lane all the way around the track but let's face it -- the home straight uses all the lanes for every event but there are only a couple events that use the outside lanes on the turn or backstretch.
No, it's about saving lane 1. Most of the prelims only had 8 people in them. They used lanes 2-9 to give lane 1 less use.
Do you think it will happen. If it does, can Mitchell resign before the meet? <
Update: THe US has dropped the baton. Here is our article on the race. Here is our article on the race and re-race:
No place to advance to--that was a semi final and there are only 8 lanes on the track
So now the US runs alone tonight to try to qualify after its protest leads to Brazil's DQ. Man, the boos will rain down. Challenging circumstances.
I love this. It's what the Olys should be about, meaningless controversy.
More challenging to run a solo time trial in front of a booing crowd, or in the chaos of other runners starting, stopping, running alongside?
No matter what, if I were the Chinese team I'd be ready to demand a re-run under identical conditions if USA beats the time.

Only in the last few days have these games come to life. Now, finally we have athletes involved in sex scandals and drunken escapades and good old fashioned controversies about DQs and fairness of diving running races.

You need to make provisions somehow for a nine team final. There are circumstances in which you might have 9 teams advance, including a deadheat for fourth place (Which China and Canada almost did). You could have a two heat final, with the USA and three slowest qualifiers in the first heat.

the interference does look particularly strong
Brazil interfered but Felix panicked and threw the baton. I hope Felix sits this one out. She panicked at the 2015 World Relays as well. She also is not one of the top four 100m runners for the USA so she shouldn't be on the squad anyway. She has had a great career but I don't think she should be on the 4 x100m relay team.

I think China is better off watching. If they join the re run, they will get torched by the US. Better off making them run solo. This is of course making the huge assumption that they get the stick around this time.
Bumping Canada and/or China would create another uproar if the US team is able to beat their time. We have a couple of options here:
1. Find another track with 9 lanes and run the event there
2. Build another lane onto the Oly stadium track
3. Have 4 teams start on one end of the track, and 5 on the other end. 2 finishing lines.
4. Have Canada and China run in the same lane since they have identical times.

Wouldn't she still win a medal if she sits out? I think that's how it works with swimming relay teams. If you're in one of the heats but not in the finals, you still get whatever medal your team gets in the finals.
I say we negotiate. USA will drop out of the relay if we can have our swimmers back.

Fairness of diving is a non-issue. Some people just are not very bright but you can't restrict them from speaking (or typing) because of that.

I like the 9 teams, waterfall start idea.
