I'd like to give you my perspective Former OCD Runner because I'm in a position that you're talking about possibly being in in the future. I was never as good as you were, but I ran for 10yrs competitvely. 15:08 5k PR and 4:17 mile PR. Even moved out to Flagstaff in the summer of 2013 to try and become all american that year (D3) and was running 90-100mi/week out there. I graduated in 2014 and got a job as a financial advisor. My career is 100% commission based, and heavily dependent on your own work ethic which I love with the Runner's mindset I had. But because it's a results oriented business, I made new goals career wise rather than running wise and last year I actually finished top 5% in the country for all advisors under 4yrs experience. But because of my devotion to my career, I work every day from 8am-9pm, saturdays from 9am-2pm and often show up on sundays for a few hours to prep for the week. I haven't ran seriously since I graduated college. There were a few 1month stints where I tried to get back in shape but it became very frustrating. Frustrating because running is VERY tough for me now. I loved the 20mi long runs cruising at 6:30s joking around with friends the entire sunday morning. Now I can barely run 4mi at 8min pace. I've gained a lot of weight. And I can't motivate myself for a long enough time frame to give up the only free time I had in the day to wind down from work. It sucks, and I really miss the glory days and the runs I used to crush with great friends and teammates.
Currently I'm starting a new workout program called crush fitness to lose weight, then I'm going to try and seriously get back into running, but it's hard. My biggest advice is to do what you're doing and stay in shape. Doesn't have to be running shape, just don't get fat. You'll miss it one day if you hold out long enough.
