I bought a DVD on Ebay of the Munich 5000, 10000, and the 800. The quality of the footage was very good and must be a copy of the BBC broadcasts. I noticed several things that took place in the race or were spoken by the commentators.
1. When Viren and Gammoudi fell in the 10000m, the announcers did not say ANYTHING about Viren coming back to win the race but they spent 3 laps commenting on Gammoudi and how brave he was(he dropped out). Prety amazing because Viren did set a new WR.
2. While Pre did run his guts out, he made a severe Tactical Error by staying in Lanes 2 and 3 for most of the race. To add extra cruelty, the BBC announcers say on the Backstretch that the Medalists were certain to be Viren, Gammoudi, and Pre.
3. Viren, on the other hand, ran very wise and stayed on the inside. Because Pre boldly proclaimed he was goping to run the last mile in 4:00, Viren made sure he was within 5m of Pre with 4 laps to go.
I would be interested to hear what other have to say about these races- especially those of you who competed against Pre in the 1970's
