Seems like a bargain at the basic $39.95/month.

There are still some bugs to be worked out in the residential VOIP environment..it works well most of the time, but you will occasionally sound like Darth Vader to the people on the other end.
There are some great bells and whistles with the various packages, but remember, if your cable goes out (or your ISP if you reach them via cable), your phone is out...like wise if your power goes out because your adpaters/cable modem need power.
You may also need to reboot your cable modem after an outage...something I certainly don't want if my 11 year old is home alone...so you'd want to keep a cell phone handy in case you'd ever need to call 911.
there's not a single voip "environment". there are several dozen ip telephony providers out there, including some of the rbocs. service quality, price and features vary from vendor to vendor. do some research on who is offering what in your area. we subscribe to cablevision voip and really like it -- and bundled with BB internet access and cable tv for $90 it's a great deal.

for location specific product/vendor offerings.
i use vonage and i love it. its 24.99 a month and it has more features than anything you can get from your telephone company. you can choose what area code you want no matter what state or city you live. if you moved to new york and all your friends live in texas you can get a new york area code and an additional TX area code for 4.99. You can live in haiti and have an area code back home and everyone calls you for free. you can also get a virtual number so it shows a different caller id if you dont want to give out your real number. you manage it all online, pretty cool and it sounds as good as a land line. has to be cable and not dsl.
post your email address so i can refer you, you get 1st month free, i get 2.
