Lydiard used to have his runners do just that. 200-400m hill, but bounding up instead of running up (Think of a pogo stick, exaggerated vertical motion, very little horizontal motion so that it takes you around 3 minutes to cover the distance). Then jog 3 minutes, run back down the hill, jog 3 minutes do some 50-400m sprints, repeat up/down/sprint for up to an hour.
