is it really safe to go from 0-34mpw in 4 weeks if there is a history of running-related injury? this just seems so opposite from what everyone else says

or does anyone have a history of using the lydiard method and have a problem with injury
I got the impression that Arthur believed running alone does not cause unjuries - there has to be a problem causing them.
You have to find out the cause of the injury and correct it - be it a muscle imbalance, incorrect shoes, going too fast too soon, etc.
Most healthy people should be able to progress that fast, if they run slow enough. Surely, not everyone will.
What sort of running injuries are you talking about?
shin injuries, i have a history of them, 1 stress fracture and shin splints
Yeah, you need to figure out why.
Are they anterior shin splints? - on the front/outer part of the lower leg. These are very common for newer runners whos calves & shin muscles aren't strong enough yet. Can get very painful, indeed. Should improve with conditioning, but may have to back off running to give them a chance to calm down.
Or medial shin spints? - on the inside of the lower leg, especially halfway down the tibia kind of on the back side of it. Take your finger and follow the tibia (inside shin bone) pressing down on the back edge. When you get to the part about halfway between your ankle & knee it is really painful. This is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome and I'm guessing that might be you because it can lead to stress fractures. Sometimes all you need is more arch support and/or more flexible calves. sometimes it is harder to solve.
Have you seen a good physical therapist? I had all kinds of injuries until I went to see a PT and they taught me why I was getting injured off of low mileage. Also, make sure you have the right shoes for you. Go slow why building mileage. You shouldn't be out of breath.
I was stuck on 25-35 miles per week until I decided to try the Lydiard prgression. I did the 30, 40, 50 progression.
One other thing that you may want to try is to be as consistent as possible.
Good luck
