Every athlete has to think about what is best for themselves. I would disagree that he has been "protected" from racing. However, I can see why you would get that impression. But if that is how he thinks he will have the most long term success in T&F, then he should run/race that way. In this case, I think it seems fairly obvious he is focused on Rio. Indoor nationals in general has more top athletes missing than is typical for indoors, because people are focused on Rio.
He mentioned in a post-race interview that he was strictly focusing on the Olympic trials. I think it was either after his 1500 win in Portland or after Boston but I forget which.
I heard he was hanging out with Willis in Pornland. I heard he was training hard and when he comes in Eugene he'll be right back up for Rio.
protected? what does that mean? it's probably inconsistent training and injury why he doesn't race infrequently. he gets pumped when he wins and races, he's a competitor when he's on.don't you think he understands he hasn't delivered after his 3:30 and wants to find success again?!i hope he's not injured. he's too tall for indoors anyway though. I think he should slowly build up for outdoors/Olympic Trials and give it a last shot and if it doesn't work, hang up the spikes

It's with a heavy heart that I withdraw from the indoor championships. Best of luck to those competing.
I'll see you on the outdoor oval.
he has a funny tweet of a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other - it sounds like he has some dings and doesn't want to push it.
this is it for him - no good performance at the trials, he's done. So prob wise to be careful.

Is Pornland where they make porn flicks?
How long of a rest does he get after he sees Eugene before getting with Rio?
Oh I get it, "Dude." Just cough up the dough for your tickets; don't worry who's competing. That's one of the reasons the sport is on life support. No shows and top competitors, for the most part, dodging each other.

He's been injured more often then not in the past several years, and you want him to just make sure he shows up at USAs for indoors when the Olympics are this summer? Hello McFly! Maybe if you were in his position, you'd think differently. At his height he is at a huge disadvantage in an indoor 1500, and has a good chance of getting tangled up in a big competitive field. Heck he has a good chance of getting tangled up outdoors, but at least there the oval is twice a big with half as many corners.
"Rupp certified" is so yesterday and has been replaced with "Wheating certified"
Meaningless. All speculation with no substance.

Wheating didn't have the World Indoor standard for either the 800 or the 1500, so perhaps he figured there was no point in an Olympic year.
Maybe the point would be to try to win a US Championship and put that on his resume.
What was the point then of any of the races he ran this year?
I understand if he tweaked something and didn't want to push it.
But I wouldn't understand putting low importance in a national championships if you were already doing indoor races.
And frankly, it denigrates the value of the meet and disrespects the athletes that do put value in a national title.
(I'm actually not that bothered by it. I do hope he's healthy for outdoors and has a good year)

He has big holes in between and before Eugene and Rio that he must come in hard and long because you have to be ready for multiple rounds to come in Eugene and Rio.
Each time he comes in Eugene he seems to have grown. It seems a little at a time. Every inch counts when it comes in the end.

I have confirmed that he's not injured and that he is just choosing to focus on outdoors and the trials.

Thank you Dave.
Symmonds isn't surprising since he doesn't like indoors. Plus he's coming off an injury
