I was at Big Ten Indoors in 2002 and from that point forward I considered the pole vault to be the most dangerous event without a doubt.
Kevin Dare was a United State Junior National Champion in the event while at Penn State and he died shortly after a mishap at the meet.

Kira Grunberg, Austrian women's PV record holder, fell and broke her neck last year, ended up quadriplegic. Sad.
hammer. There is a reason they often hold it before the fans arrive, or in a separate venue.

Javelin Catcher
I like that state WA has javelin as a standard high school event. More high school kids throwing javelin means greater probability of future javelin WC and/or Olympic medalists.
Ed Burke, the hammer thrower who carried the flag for the U.S. team at the 1984 L.A. Olympics, nearly killed his own wife, Shirley(who was also his coach), in a gruesome accident in 1962. She was watching one of his training sessions from inside their car when one of his throws got away, crashed through the car's windshield and hit her in the face. She survived and recovered, convinced Ed to return to the sport -he had stopped throwing out of grief- ,and he went on to make three Olympic teams.

Has someone really died from the shot put? I realize the weight could kill a person but the shot just doesn't travel as far as the others.
An official was killed last year during weight throw warmups at Cornell.
Yeah, my coach got hit in chest with 35pound weight indoors off the spin while standing at edge of cage and survived.

Race walking kills.
I strained my neck trackside at an indoor meet at Reggie Center/Boston, watching women in bun huggers in the blocks for a 200 meters start.
Yes, more than you'd think. In fact, from my 40+ year experience, being killed by a flying shot seems to be the most common implement to be hit by.
However, I think I've heard of more deaths by people not paying attention to flying hammers than any other throwing event.
The pole vault is the most dangerous to participate in, bar none.

The sport of Track and Field may not seem too dangerous but there are some events out there that can mess you up real good. What do you think is the most dangerous event?
Coach.
Most of them are pedos and will go to prison for their bad deeds (1/3 of my coaches did...number 2 I'm sure will get caught eventually...the third one is a good guy, just a bit weird).
