Why does letsrun hate Jared Ward?

I think that Jared is a marathoner and already proved he can out kick Ritz, Puskedra, Chelenga as he did just that in New Haven this year. This will be Puskedras third marathon in the last 8 months. It will catch up with him. Meb seems to lose a step every few months. He also always runs a tune up race in his marathon build up, but not this time. I bet he is not 100%. Chelenga and Estrada are debut runners. Could be great but not first time out the door.

Ritz, Ward, Puskedra, Rupp.

Only 3 will make it.

I would agree on Rupp, Ward, Ritz, Puskedra, then Meb...in that order.

You must have mentioned 12 guys in the latest article....and no Jared Ward.

I think many of you don't get what the article was about. The article we wrote was about who was the favorite for the Trials - Ritz, Rupp or Meb. That was question #1. The 2nd question was which of those three was most likely to make the team. That's it. The which of those three was implied - maybe we didn't make that clear.. It was an internal debate.

In the course of our debate, a few other names were mentioned for illustrative purposes. We didn't come close to mention everyone.

It had NOTHING to do with Ward. Here are people with faster qualifying times than Ward's whom we also didn't mention

Ryan Vail

Elkanah Kibet

Fernando Cabada

Nick Arciniaga

Matt Llano

Josphat Boit

Aaron Braun

Shadrack Biwott

So counting Ward, we didn't mention 9 of the top 14 qualifiers since Teg is retired.

That article was meant to be exclusively about Rupp, Ritz and Meb - the big three- and which of them was a) most likely to make it and b) win it.

Ward is a gamer and I expect him to do well, but I would be very surprised if makes the team. I would rank Ward near the top of the top-10 and if he manages to finish 5th or 6th, that would be very good result for him. Btw, when Rupp entered the picture, one spot is automatically taken away and Ritz and Meb don't have to have a perfect day to make the team.

I agree. Ward is the type of guy that back in the day would have a great chance to make the team.

Up until 2012, in the history of the Trials, if you broke 2:12, you made the Olympics in every Trials race except 1 tiny exception ( Dave Gordon (OR) 2:11:59 in 1984 was 4th).

Thus, there was lots of hope for people like Ward (or Wejo when he ran) as your generic 13:30/28:00/2:12 talent had a shot.

In 2012, 5 guys broke 2:12 and didn't make the time. One of them even broke 2:10 and didn't make the team.

Is Ward making the team if Ritz, Meb and Rupp run up to their potential? No he's not. Ward and a slew of the guys need some help. 13:30 guys don't normally beat 13:00 types without help.

The beauty of the marathon is you are more likely to get that help than if you are on the track. Guys get injured training for the marathon.

Weldon was your typical 10k guy that could never figure out the marathon. There are several guys like Weldon. Both Torres, Bizuneh, Carney, and many other very good 10k guys that failed in the marathon. Jared Ward is not one of those guys.

There are hundreds of US guys that Weldon could destroy in the 10k and not touch in the Marathon. Guys like Sell, Gilmore, Lemhkuhle,, Briney. Ward is different than Weldon.

This year in New Haven Ward out kicked Chelenga, Puskedra, and Ritz who are all faster than Weldon at EVERY distance.

Exactly, and don't forget that Ward has a great marathon coach in Ed Eyestone, whereas Weldon had John Kellogg, who can't figure out the marathon. Totally different runners. I don't think Weldon was anywhere near the top road racer during his peak like Ward is... Ward just made $80,000 USD in winnings alone in 2015. Guy knows how to race.That being said, when do the predictions start!!! I want to put my money where my mouth is!

He spent his marathon career frustrated and never figured it out but still thinks he has it figured out.
