Fear of the imaginary pain, of course.
Pressure of racing, high breath rate and volume, the effort and perception of going fast, loss of motor control, intense concentration on holding form, all are misinterpreted as pain and have you cringing in terror before the race even starts.
Only the burning of acidosis and the suffocating feeling of CO2 buildup are actual pain, but those are worse afterwards (drop out at 700m and compare) and are far from unbearable.
Once you understand that most of the "pain" is just a matter of shying away from the prospect of extreme effort, you will race better.
