How fast could a world class 400m specialist (like Mikey Johnson) run in a smartly raced mile, or even 800m.
Faster than me? Probably. But how fast?

You'd be surprised how slow these guys would run. I think a guy off the street would run it faster than them. Decathlets can't even keep up with women in the 1500m and they supposedly do a little training for it.
Different bodies, muscles, energy systems, mentality etc.
It' would be ugly seing MJ run his 3rd lap in about 69, but that's what would happen most likely.
I've seen Obie Moore (used to be a 46 second 400 guy in JC/High School) run just under 4:30. He was never "world class", bcut not too far off.
i may be wrong, but I think when checking out the Arkansas website not long ago, they had a 46s 400m runner running 25minutes for 8k? surely he would carve up the MD's

obea moore started as a youth 800 runner. holds the USATF under 10 national record - 2:19.00. held the national h.s. freshman indoor record (1:56+) until last year.
not shocking that he could run a decent mile.
I was a decent 400ih runner in collage. Below are my PR
200m-21.50-high school
4001h-50.06, which I think, is equivalent to a 46 low
800 Indoor-1.50.89
1500m-3.58 did it once
8k-25.58
10k-34.30-cross
Obea was definitely "world class" in the 400 (he ran 45.14 as a sophomore and ran sub-1:50 in high school as well.
Never ran a mile race, but I did reps in practice during cross-country season.
5*1600
4.45,4.40,450,4.40 and kick with a 4.30
I don’t know what that translates too….
The fastest 400/800 doubler I can think of is Alberto Juantorena 44.26/1:43.44.
Mark Everett the American is close at 44.59/1:43.20.
I would put my money on Everett in a mile race between the two at their primes, but Juantorena did do the 400/800 golden double in Montreal so I suppose that's got to count for something. :)

At the 1983 Penn Relays H.S. DMR, Willingboro opened on the 3/4 leg with a 400 runner named Bradford who split 3:06. He could do 48 or 47 in the open 400.
Seb Coe had a 400 PR of around 46.8.
When Lee Evans held the WR in the 400, he came to all-comers meets in the winter and ran the mile in around 4:30. That was during his base training. but that was also back when 400 runners did cross country running.
im calling your bluff jungle bunny. whats your main event and whats your pr? you would think someone who could run that workou would break 14:50 with ease.
My PR are Posted above.
My main event was the 400ih.My PR in college was 50.06 but a dipped under 50 right after college.
And Yes, I run 25.58 in 8k but never attempted the 5k or the mile. During indoor season I use to run the 500m, 800m 4*400 and during conference finals I did the 1200m leg for the DMR-3.00.00…
Jungle bunny, our PR's are almost the same
21.50 hs
no hurdles for me
1:50 800
3:02 1200 split
3:58 1500
26:19 8K
You had/have some range on you! Not to many 25 8K guys can run a 49 sec 400IH.
I had natural speed but my training was all strength based. Below is a typical training schedule right before the outdoor season.
4*400 two sets
Set 1-51-30sec rest-53
Set 2-53-30sec rest-59.with ten min between sets
2*1200 3.10-3.15
2*600- 1.19-1.20
10*200 25-27
30-45 Minutes run in the morning at 6.00-6.30 pace
Elma fud,
When i pr'd in the 400ih in college i was 138lbs.I was trim like a 1500m runner,by the way i am 5'7
So ... you're 57.
In college - let's say that was 37 years ago and you were a trim 20-year-old of 138 wispy lbs - you ran 1:50.89 indoors for the 800 metres.
Hmmmmm...
1. That would have been in 1968 -- when not that many 800 metre races were held indoors: most if not all indoor facilities at the time were 880 yards. Where was this 800 metre race held?
2. Fully automatic timing at the collegiate level was rarer still; most times from that era above and beyond the pure sprints were hand times.
I'm having a difficult time believing this.

I think he said he's 5'7, as in "five feet, seven inches tall." Not 57. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I believe the guy. Why would he waste the time of lying and writing a bunch of prs under an anonymous name? His range is awesome, but is believable.
Yes, it is a believable range... you're probably right, I suspect he was talking about his height, not his age.

I went to school at seton hall university graduated in 2000.I ran the 400 ih pr at the 1999 IC4A champs. The 800m pr (1.50.87) was at Seton hall 1999 open, held at the Seton hall indoor track (flat) hard to belief huh? Now, do the research and prove me wrong….and yes..i am 5’7
