My PT is not a runner, but brilliant, smart guy. He was treating me the other day and I complained about feeling "weak" even though I run quite a bit and am successful. He says I'd be a better runner if I did focus on functional strengthening, which I agreed.
So then he asked, "how many days a week do you run." I said, "7". He said why? I said, well, that's what's worked for me and just based on experience and what results have shown.
He said, what's the scientific explanation to running every day? And I was stumped. I don't know the answer. I babbled something about blood plasma, how that's how it's always been done, the whole time realizing I was sounding like an idiot. He flat out said, " you know, at your age, you're not going to improve your aerobic ability. If you replaced a day of running with a day of strength, you will be faster and better."
And I am starting to believe him. At my age (mid-30s), why would I need to continue 7/day week? Can anyone answer the science behind having to run EVERY single day? Have there been any case examples of running every other day and being great?
Thanks.
