My son is a 24:35 +/- 8K guy. He has been 3rd to 5th man this year on his D1 Power 5 conference XC team. He recently scored in their conference meet.
He's been better at track than XC, but he's improved so rapidly in XC that I don't know what his track times will be. My guess is 8:15 to 8:25 in the 3K and 14:15 to 14:25 in the 5K. Maybe better.
He's a sophomore walk on and receives $0 in athletic scholarship.
His school is private ($60K+/yr) and is fully funded for 12.6 scholarships. They try to be respectable at track and XC and, therefore, are mediocre in both. The point is that I think they spread the scholarships around. I don't know how much they devote to distance runners.
Would you give him $? If yes, how much? Why?
(If it matters, while I'd love for him to get $ to ease the financial burden, I am actually more interested in seeing the coaches acknowledge his contribution via a scholarship, even if it's nominal.)
