Missouri
You realize right that op did not ask which was the slowest state right? Op asked which had slowest champions. NP produces slow times.
CO is arguably a top 5 state for running. If you looked only at NP times it would never look that way.
Matt Gonzalez won New Mexico in 17:30 in 1999
The UP of Michigan refers to their finals as UP Finals, not "State Finals." I don't think it's fair to include them in this because they aren't allowed to compete in the race that is considered Michigan's state championship. That is the situation for track as well. FWIW, I won four track UP Finals races and never refered to myself as a state champion.

I think it's important to mention that this was for 3 miles. They're also the best cross country runners the state has had in 20 years or more. So yeah, LA sucks.
Also, the state meet course itself is often pretty long (over 5km occasionally) and we have 7 classes, despite being a state with an average population -- this makes for some very slow state champions.
Lol, LA has one guy that ran 14:30 and one guy that runs 14:34 (3 mile). Keith and Coston are good runners, but they do not represent the most of LA. You know because there are 2 boys under 15. Also, there are 5 girls that are under 18 (this is for the 3 mile keep in mind), so that's 5 girls under 18:40 basically, other states have girls in the 16's for the 5k!
Yes, it has to be Mississippi. The state is last in everything. Horrible place.

YESS. I think LA should have class C, B, and A together, classes 1a and 2a together, classes 3a and 4a together and then class 5a. so there would be 4 classes, all with decent runners.
You can be in the top 200 and not break 17:20 (18 for the 5k)
The Upper Peninsula for Michigan runs their separate state meet (in 3 divisions). Usually if you can break 18 your a top 5 guy, breaking 17 pretty much guarantees you the victory.

I'm a little late to this thread, but I have to put in a vote for the great state of Alabama. One data point: The winner of the small schools (1A) 1600 in 2008 ran 4:57.
In XC in 2008, the winner of the 1-2A race ran 16:28, and top 15 was 18:53.
For 5A, (6A is the largest) 16:23 won it and 17:15 was all state.
4A in 2009 was won in 17:22. All state was 18:45.
There are tons of results like this all through the years...

We have one too many classes imo.
But were they relaxed?

AL added 7A last year. 6A champ was 15:34 and 7A was 15:51.
I have talked to the 7A kid and he told me that he wasn't noticing each tree per se, (2, 4, 5 etc) and that he was struggling to keep up and wanted to push the pace but just couldn't catch the guy at the back. He tried to make some excuse about a workout the day before the day before...
That's cool and all but I have no clue what you're trying to say.
