Last night, as my husband and I were busily wrapping our only child's numerous Christmas presents (from us, his three sets of grandparents, two godparents, and aunts and uncles -- oh, and Santa, of course), I was overcome with anxiety and guilt about the quantity of gifts he was receiving. I mean, he had over twenty items to open! So, I suggested to my husband that we put a few away for other gift-giving occasions throughout next year. This was not with spendthrifty motives, I was simply concerned that the abundant haul would be overkill. My husband's response was that "this is what Christmas is all about, let the kid have some fun."
So my question is, is this what Christmas is really about? Would it be so bad for the kid to have 5 to 10 presents under the tree? Or am I being a scrooge to want to limit his number of gifts. Since my son has already opened, and played with, his twenty-some gifts, your responses won't affect this year's outcome. However, I am curious as to what other people think. Just to help you out, this is an (almost) complete list of what he got:
-GIANT remote-controlled Hummer
-Razor scooter
-Leapster handheld educational video game
-4 Leapster cartridges (these are $25/each)
-Hot Wheels Racetrack
-Easy-Bake oven
-18 books
-Electronic piggy bank
-Large wooden parking garage (he's a car guy)
-Lego set
-Clothes
-Matchbox cars
-Chess set (a nicer one than he already has)
-Dragon game
-Mancala Game
