Two weeks ago I was diagnosed by MRI with microfractures of the navicular and a significant bone bruise of the talus, about a month after severely rolling my ankle on a training run. (well, I had continued to run on this for 3 weeks before getting the appt and subsequent MRI). My doc put me in a boot up to my ankle and she told me to use crutches for 2 weeks. I have a follow up appt at 3 weeks. My pain (sort of throbbing in nature) is on the anterior/medial side of the foot/ankle joint (the N spot, I guess, which my doc pressed and it was ouchy), and the pain radiates down the medial arch towards the big toe. And when I ran on it, it would give me sharp pains across the top of my foot. I was stupid to run, I know, because I couldn't manage anything faster than a 9:30 mile (my marathon pace is about an 8:15) simply because pushing off caused pain. I found if I put the majority of the weight on the outside of the foot and ran slow I could make it through a run. I look back and think of how stupid I was. My doc said after he got the MRI report he was surprised I could run at all.
Since being in the boot, I have not had the sharp pain I mention above across the top of the foot, but I continue to have some of that throbbing pain on the front/side of my ankle that sometimes still goes down my medial arch (not severe, but enough to make it presence known) when I am sitting at my desk or in bed. Not all of the time, but some of the time.
How long did you have this kind of throbbing pain, if you had it?
Did you go back to weight bearing if you still had this pain?
What questions should I be asking my doctor about my foot and treatment?
She also said I was to take no ibuprophen at all (yes, I had been doing that while still running and it dulled the pain, stupid I know).
I love to run long distance, and do a couple of marathons a year. I generally average about 50 mpw. Now, I am aqua jogging, which seems ok if I keep my foot flexed, not pointed.
