Cram should have been close from 83 and Aouita from 84.
If Wessinghage could run a 3:31 in 80 and Scott a 3:47 Mile in 82, then superior athletes should have broken 3:30 by then.
The 3:30 barrier was long overdue in 85.
Psychologically its like the same thing that happened 30 years earlier with the sum 4 min mile. Once Bannister did it, Landy did it a few times within a year and then more got in on the act.
It's a normal historical phenomenon.
