Hey Im a first time coach a few years out of high school. My former high school has terrible coaches which has led a girl (junior) at the school to ask me to help aid her running because she knows I know quite a bit about it. But, I have never coached anyone so I want to make sure Im giving her good advice and not messing her up. She wants to be a really good cross country runner next year and is pretty good now, with a 4k PR of 15:06. In track she has run 2:21 for 800, 5:22 for the mile, and 11:31 for the 2 mile. I hope to be able to get her down around 11 for the 2 mile this spring. She has always ran off natural ability before and never ran muhc in the offseason (about 10 miles a week). If she could make state in one event thatd be progress for this spring, but we are hoping to help her excel next fall. Right now since she had not done much running in the offseason prior to this year I had her take 10 days off after cross season, then I started her with modest mileage. She did 20 miles a week the first two weeks and I had her increase it by 5 miles a week every other week. so 20 20, 25 25, 30 30, 35 35, 40 40, 45 45, 50. The week after she runs 50, the schools track practices start and I will not be allowed to tell her what to do anymore. Is this going to give her a good base for track with an eye for the cross season. Also, once a week I am having her run 8 X 100 in 15-16 after her daily run. Following Lydiards style, I have her doing double milage on Sunday with no days off all winter. Is there anything Im doing terribly wrong or anything to add? Any advice you can give me could help? Also, based on the background Ive given and workouts Im providing what should she be capable of this spring? And one last thing... is there anything more I should implement to help her prepare for cross country next season during the winter. Thank you very much
