Quitting my hs team but still running races on my own?

Run some more on your own. When I was in high school 20 years ago, my coach bought into that low mileage stuff and had us running about 15 miles a week. I ran an extra 4-5 miles at home on my own each night. Problem solved.

Since nearly all meets for XC are team based, and I don't know of any invitationals (that allow non-team entries) that allow a high schooler to run one without a designated adult coach you're pretty much out of luck.

You can road race, but since they're non-sanctioned you're not going to get qualifiers to regional or state competitions.

So time to grow up and run with the team, or give up on running competitively in college.

I am sympathetic, but generally side with those telling you not to quit the team. Regarding your question above, my fear is that you won't get a chance to explain yourself at all. There's an old saying in youth sports: uncoachable kids become unemployable adults. True, running fosters individualism, but getting along with others is a life skill one should take away from being on a team. You're going to encounter many people with whom you don't see eye to eye. Best learn to get along with (and work with) them now.

Yea man, don't quit your high school team. You'll never have that opportunity to run with that kind of group again.

Listen to the other guys in the thread. Just chill out and do your thing.

You are going to be in situations, whether they be in sports, school, work etc, where you will be around people that are not as passionate as you. It's not always easy, but it's going to happen.

As others have eluded to, I don't think you're as good as you think you are.

Look. Just stick it out and race. If you want to encourage your teammates, just shut up and lead by example. And the other posters are correct; if you quit your HS team over this, pretty much no college coach will want to work with you.

I have to agree: The only person who'll get hurt if you quit the team is you.

You might get more sympathy if you give us some examples of what these guys have done that is so disrespectful. And ditto for your coach: What is he doing that's wrong? If he's not having you run enough, why can't you just run on your own, as was suggested above?

In the meantime, have you talked to any adults around you about your situation? People who know you are likely to give more useful advice than a bunch of know-it-alls on an LRC message board.

Even if none of this is your fault, and these guys really are a bunch of immature idiots, so what? This not the last time you will have to work with a bunch of immature idiots with no adult around to make them behave. In situations like that, your best choice is often to suck it up and be the adult. It's usually unfair, and it's always a pain in the neck. But learning how to get along with jerks is a valuable skill. If you get good enough at it, you will eventually get paid a lot for it.

Track PRs? I think we need those in order to determine whether or not college coaches will care.

We just had our first race tuesday and we have had only 4 true workouts that have really tested us the rest have been meaning less tempo runs or 200's. The way my teamates have disrespected me is they dont listen to a word i say the other day our coach told us we had pratice on our own and to meet up well the other guys set a time without talking to me and i had to fiqure it out from a freshman and im a senior and the #2 guy on the team

From what I can tell from what you've written here I would say the problem is entirely you. There's a reason they don't respect you and it's because you don't deserve it. You have a bad attitude and pretty much everyone on your team views you as a huge pain in the @ss. You're not as a fast as you think you are and the team would probably be better off without you so I would just quit. Also don't count on running in college because this problem is only going to get worse if you join and the coach and the rest of the team see what a major d-bag you are. Re-assess your life or be a total loser for the rest of it. Your choice.

Try to talk to your coach about your concerns. If he is not willing to listen there are other ways to go about this

If the coach is telling you to go off on your own, do the tough workout you haven't done.

Btw, there is nothing wrong with early season tempos. 4 workouts over what period of time?

Don't let these guys get in the way. Try to find some common ground with someone on the team even if it's a freshman. The other posters are correct here suggesting that you need to stick with it or your potential college program will lose faith in you.

My team is kind of like yours in the aspect of not wanting to work so hard, but what you really shouldn't do is yell at them like you're the coach. That's the coach's job. You may be the captain but lighten up a bit m8. The others will probably end up feeling bad for not working and end up working hard on their own.

Try to fix your relationship with them. It'll be a long process, but just try being more approachable and sociable.
