Looks like Maton will have a built in excuse when he gets beat by Fisher in NY. However, I do commend hiim for showing up. Many others would just avoid the matchup all together.
I was talking to another coach today and he told me, "If I was Maton's coach, I'd call it a season. No way would I race Fisher. Why would you want to do that?"
I was like, "Because that's what the sport is supposed to be about. To see who is the best. You want HSers to avoid each other like pros? Pathetic."
"Gets beaten." Apparently there was no written portion to your application for college coaching. I can't imagine you're a coach of any note with an attitude toward one of the greatest high school runners of all time such as that.

Maton is the 3rd fastest high school student ever over the mile.
Grant is among a long list of high school students who have come close to breaking 4 minutes, but have not done so. This could change, of course.
Going to be Derrick Fernandez all over again
Who??? Lol
Who??? Lol

I think he means German, who seems to get injured at the drop of a hat. He is being run into the ground. If I were his coach, I'd call it a season and focus on rehab.

Fisher has dominated all of his high school races in the last two years. If he defends his Dream mile title there is no doubt who had the superior prep resume.
If Maton has an injury, then gettting that healed should be his priority - not racing a silly HS meet. These guys will meet up any numbers of times in College. As the Fernandez situation reminds us - what you you in HS doesn't mean much later on if chronic injury becomes a problem, and as someone with a history of chronic Achilles problems (like right now), I wouldn't take a chance. A smart coach would pull the plug as it should never be about the "now" with young talent like these two.
But the questions is, who is coaching this boy? Who hurt this child??? We need to rip them apart like we do all the high school coaches when someone gets hurt. Obviously someone is overtraining and using this child, because it has to be the coach that creates all injuries, right? Injuries can't just happen, an adult has to make them occur based on what I have seen on these boards. He was healthy when he left his high school coach, so who has caused this major injury to this poor wee boy!?!?!?! I want a freaking name so I can bash them anonymously and pretend that I know more than him!
That would be Parker Stinson.

He probably means Derrick and Fernandez.
Some of you have no respect for an achilles injury. Putting him in spikes and asking him to race a mile is basically the #1 way to exacerbate the problem. He should call it a season.

What? Pre is a silly HS meet?
Maton, sub4, done that!
I could see how it would be difficult, being in the best shape of your life, capable of setting PRs in several distances and having the Dream mile race coming up that you have been pointing to all season.
However, achilles injuries shouldn't be taken lightly. I'm just getting back to 30 min runs after ignoring a flare up injury from over 6months ago. If they get bad you are screwed... I had one develop, ignored it on a run thinking I can finish up my run. I was wrong....
Frustrating as it is, caution should be exercised. If it isn't getting significantly better quickly he should call it a season.
On the bright side in the article he said he has never had achilles issues before so nothing chronic yet.
I agree. I know the Achilles injury well. However, I do remember running on soft grass and concentrating on the pain feeling, getting to know it then
in sleep, visualizing the injury going away. I believe I got mine from intense
hill training in new shoes.
Matson doesn't have anything in terms of sub-four prove at this point.
Why aim for an asterisk when he can sit back and heal.

Obviously he means Derrick and Fernandez. You brand new to this sport? A tweener? Lol, lol, lol.
