Okay so we haven't heard from Mary recently. I for one would like to hear her opinion on what is going on. Also, I feel like she is going to race poorly this weekend as well.
Does anyone think she will perform well this weekend?
Will she talk to the press??

I think she simply got homesick.
OR
She wanted to distance herself (no pun intended) from Salazar before the poop hit the fan.
She can be a world class runner anywhere she wants and I'm sure any shoe company would be happy to have her. -
I wonder what novel she's going to "read" pre-race. AlSal's book club is quite potent!

Wouldn't surprise me at all if she's a "DNS"!
If she does run, my guess she'll run okay, maybe a sub 2:40.
Might even win, though Charnigo is good.
But will she give an interview....AND talk about Salazar.
I would hope she leaves NOP and joins the Mike Hickey group.
She'd have McKayla Fricker and Alexa Efraimson to train with.
And Hickey--while pals with Salazar--is also the complete opposite of AlSal in attitude and demeanor.
And who can deny what Hickey has done with Alexa & McKayla?
Also, she'd be close to Portland U, if she decides to return to school there! -
They have an 800 and a 1k in the same meet very stupid.
Her best 1k is around 2:35 indoors, and she has been running lousy so far this year, my guess is probably from overtraining, she needs a confidence boost by running a good time before USATF/World trials so my guess is Salazar lets her taper off for this meet and she runs 2:32-2:33.
I really would prefer if she would switch to the 800 for this meet, not thrilled about rarely run non standard distances. -

The 1k is AFTER all the Diamond league events are over, and then they have the high school dream races THEN they have the 1k, my guess is the television broadcast will be over before her race.
She does not seem the type that would answer questions on the Salazar situation, she would answer questions on the race she ran, her running etc. I just don't see her as the type to answer legal questions on the Salazar situation.
Now I hope I am wrong and she totally spills the beans.
Then again she might not know, I mean even if Salazar is doing this he may not do it with every runner he has until he knows he can trust them not to tell. -
Was this women's 1000m on the original meet schedule or was it recently added? Either way, it looks like it's been set up to give Mary Cain a low-stakes way to run in the meet outside of the national TV window.
-
well I am impressed that she is running, given what is going on with her - the poor races, the leave from NOP, the doping...she probably won't answer any questions, but just getting out in public is a big statement. We'll see how she handles it - if Mo Farah couldn't get his head in the game and Mary Cain can...that's a good sign.

I think 2:32 is awfully optimistic. I expect more like 2:38 based on her season so far. That would be a fair start.

I think she will do ok, perhaps slightly under 2:40. I am almost certain she has done some TTs to suggest she is capable of that or AlSal would not allow her to run. Also, don't expect her to give anymore than a one sentence response to any doping related questions. And, any question asked after that response will end the interview. No reporter will stupid enough to press the issue because Mary Cain is going to have a long career and they probably won't get another interview from her. -

I assume she has been running solid workouts and TTs all along, but crashing and burning in races - the question is if she has turned a corner mentally, being away from Portland.
It would be very impressive if she has. -
Mary's parents are Doctor's they knew the story was going on and got her out of Oregon before the story came out.
-
You spoke to them directly ?

Unbelievable.

First time here, I see.
Don't worry, Er....., after a few more days reaidng these boards, you'll be so inured to the bad grammar and bad facts you won't think of correcting them. Unless, of course, you've got a Sisyphus complex, in which case, you are definitely in the right place.
It's like Rabbi Tarfon said: The day is short, and the work is great, and the laborers are sluggish, and the reward is much, and the Master is urgent. -

Lets see, Adidas meet Nike athlete in an event thats not part of the Grand Prix.
1000 meter runs are typical for tuneups for bigger races to come later on. In this case probably a 1500 at nationals. Summer break for college student Mary at home, nationals , then off to Europe with NOP. -

So she's been running like shit this year, but you expect that after she takes it easy for a few days (on the advice of a coach she recently left), she can threaten Regina Jacobs' American Record (2:31.80), possibly break into the top 20 all-time outdoors, and run the fastest outdoor time in the world in over a dozen years?
That's optimistic, Douglas. I think the folks suggesting 2:39ish are closer. -

Assuming 2:35 is equal to is:201; are you saying she is in 1:58 shape right now? There is no amount of anything in a couple of weeks that's going take her from NCAA conference level to world class elite. If she breaks 2:40, it will be a good performance. I agree that her extremely poor performances are a bit of a hiccup, but Mary hadn't been running that great for nearly a year. Even her World Jr 3000m victory was good against the level of competition, but even that wasn't special for a 1:59/4:04 athlete. AlSal knew Mary wasn't on the top of her game last year and that's he opted for the 3k as opposed to the more competitive 1500 and 5k. I have worked with hundreds of young female athletes and based on everything I know, Mary will ultimately be ok, but most likely not this year. Right now her body is fighting against, once she learns how to fight back, over time she will be ok. -
The early pace will be the key factor determining the final time and I do not see anyone Cain included taking it out hard. Anything under 2:38 will be totally unexpected and low 2:40s is a more realistic result.

I'd say 2:35.0 is worth a bit faster than that -- 1:59-mid to high.
