Matthew Maton, currently #1 mile runner in high school right now, has pulled out of the Adidas Dream mile, he claims it is due to Achilles pain that has been lingering ever since he ran the sub 4 mile, citing his choice to wear a new pair of spikes for the race without breaking them in, with his withdraw do you think there is anyone that has a good chance to beat Fisher?

It makes sense that different spikes might cause it. That's why you try things out before the race.

Even Matton didn't have a very good chance to beat Fisher.

Why wouldn't the sixth sub-4 miler have a chance to beat another high schooler?
Even among the other sub-4 HS milers, only Webb, with his 3:53 would have been a clear favorite head to head agains the other five.
Fisher's a great talent but you're not being sincere if you don't think Maton would have been in contention.
All who read or post on LR can sympathize and understand how devastating it can be to get injured just when everything was going well.
We wish Matthew Maton a full recovery. He is a very talented HS runner that has a bright future.
It would have been wonderful to see both Maton and Fisher go head-to-head at the dream mile and other races during the championship portion of their seasons.
absolutely. EXACT same thing happened to me the summer of 1996. I had just broken 4 minutes for the first time, and was able to pick up some assistance. this sponsorship was not the spikes brand that I typically raced in. wearing an overly aggressive spike for a week and 2 races, my achilles was shot; and I missed being able to run the trials in atlanta. I feel bad for the kid.
I don't blame him. When I was his age I raced against some high school kids in an open meet and got my butt kicked. That really hurt my confidence. It's probably best for him to wait till he's 100% healthy to race the kids so that his confidence doesn't suffer a similar blow.
