Any school but Oregon and this isn't even a smidgen newsworthy. Goes to show you that good or bad, when Oregon runs, people sit up and take notice.

Agreed.
Losing an early season race at a triangular by .1 second. LRC keeps it plastered over the home page for 4 days and counting. Pepiot admits it was a learning experience.
Funny thing is the guy still has 6th place at NCAAs last June (which helped Oregon in their blowout victory) and will likely improve his finish this June (and hopefully help Oregon win another team title). Nothing funny about that.
He wasn't JUST celebrating...he was trying to get the crowd to CHEER HIM!

I agree with those who are surprised that this has generated so much attention. Even the European websites have picked it up and are showing the video. Things like this have happened before without going viral and this wasn't even the most blatant example of premature celebration I've seen ... not by a long shot. I don't know if it's just because it was Oregon though. I doubt that random sports sites in Ireland care more about Oregon than they do other major NCAA schools. Maybe it is because Pepiot is French.
I resent your comment though, that we've had this "plastered over the home page for 4 days" or that we've only reported on it because it was an Oregon runner. First, it has only been a major story on the home page for one day, today. (I guess tomorrow will make two since I'm not deleting it.) Before the story went viral worldwide today, we had only given it a small mention. Here are our home page archives for each day:
Saturday (when it happened): No mention -
http://www.letsrun.com/archive/2015/04/11/Sunday: Small headline in the college section, no more hyped than any other article -
http://www.letsrun.com/archive/2015/04/12Monday: Still the same small headline pushed way farther down the page than it was on Sunday -
http://www.letsrun.com/archive/2015/04/13Tuesday: A big story as we point out how the video went viral and got picked up by ESPN/Yahoo/etc -
http://www.letsrun.com/archive/2015/04/14Really, what is more newsworthy than the event itself, is the fact that it has become so newsworthy in general among the non-running media. Getting picked up by ESPN, Yahoo and others was surprising.
OP here. I first saw the story on yahoo on Monday afternoon. I did not even notice the story on the homepage before I started the thread.
This guy reminds me of Mekhissi Benebad. Cocky frenchmen
I am happy that track and field got some attention that it would not have ordinarily gotten. Maybe some people who didn't know before that there is such an event as steeplechase.

That it was in an unimportant meet only makes it more okay to laugh at.
When Jacobellis got passed at the end of the snowboard cross thing at the 2006 winter games, it wasn't as funny since the difference between gold and silver is pretty big (it was more shocking though).
Here, this guy tries to amp up the crowd (his home crowd, at that), and gets passed at the end. Only team points (and possibly a little pride) are lost. I have no problem laughing at this.
It is kind of sad that a blooper like this gets a ton of attention when amazing T&F performances often barely get a mention in mainstream media.
At the same time, I could never see this happening to anyone else besides a Duck.

Funniest, most irrelevant responses...
3) He's got an 8:33 PR...WHAT'S WILBON'S PR?!?!?
2) The team still won the meet so why would you ridicule what this individual did?!
1) We won indoors - I thought that meant people can't make fun of us when we do something stupid!

Agreed Tom,
Any TV time for T&F is a good thing.

Only a matter of time for this to happen to Ovett. How many times did Ovett celebrate at Crystal Palace? It was bound to happen sometime.
The look of shocked disbelief on Pepiot's face tells me this is the best ever. Ovett only looks ruefully chagrined.
In both instances this happened before a HOME crowd.

When Benabbad celebrates early, he still WINS.
Amazing that this is what it takes for track and field to get a little press. As I read the snarky comments on this thread, it became clear to me that we are our own worst enemies. A runner on the most famous college track team in the country makes a mistake and all the jealousy comes out of the losers who would rather get snarky than see something good happen to our sport. Just sayin'.
A MISTAKE is turning right when you could not remember it was supposed to be a left. What he did was exactly what he wanted to do. If one elects to place a bullet in a revolver and spin the cylinder, then pull the trigger...what could happen? He is a smart kid, he knew the risks to pulling up and waving to the crowd. Just like you or me if in those few seconds, as we assess our lead, decide to pull up and celebrate. This time that damn round was under the chamber, boom you lose. You knew what could happen, you did it anyway.
