The IAAF should do the following:
1) Bring back the 4k short course.
2) Make it an annual event again.
3) Give the top 10 finishers a wild card which acts as an A standard in the steeple, 5k, or 10k.
I agree with you completely. I was going to add stuff about tennis and golf requiring players to compete in certain tournaments and I think athletics should as well. I thought it was awful when there was a European meet with a 1500 and a mile so that both Coe and Ovett would run that meet but wouldn't have to race each other.
But I also don't fault athletes for decisions they make regarding their own careers within the current structure of the sport. That said, the starting point for Bill Rodgers' career was the World Cross Country Meet in 1975. People like Craig Virgin, John Treacy, and Lynn Jennings ran there regularly and I think were much better runners for doing it. So while I respect runners' choices not to run the World's I think they're often making a mistake.
News flash. Professional track is dying because the majority of the population is obese and not interested in watching something they can in no way relate to.
They watch Usain Bolt (only during the Olympics) because he's tall and black and he kinda reminds them of Lebron James. And once his ten second race is over, they change the channel.
