I've always found, particularly among amateur circles, that you are judged more on your 1500 time than let’s say the equivalent 800m or 5000m time. Any one agree?

Is this what you mean by an amateur circle?
I don't think so. The 1500 doesn't just require endurance. It also requires speed and explosiveness. I would say the marathon.
The 1500/mile always had the most entrants at the limited number of meets in which I've run. That could mean the 1500 is the most competitive event, although one could argue that more people choosing it means it requires less ability to begin with.
I have more respect for sprints because most good sprinters could be good mid-distance runners, whereas the converse is not usually true.
Do you even run, bro?

Yes In Athletics only.
No it is not the1500m. The most respected endurance event is The Marathon.

If 100 meters is an endurance event then What kind of event is 100 miles?
The mile is an event which most distance guys can be competitive, whether you are an 800m specialist or a 10,000m specialist

Well it's not "speed endurance".

Cycling along chatting for a few hours then sprinting for the last 1/2 mile. Does that really need endurance?
The 1500 is a comical leftover from the 1500 meter tracks used over 100 years ago. Three times around one of those tracks attempted to replace 4 times around a 440 yard track.
When they switched to 400 meter tracks, they couldn't just go 4 times around, oh no. They had to still pretend it was either 3 laps of a 500 or 4 laps of a 440y. They cling desperately to those distances as if 4 laps of 400 were the end of the world. How respectable is that? It's ridiculous.
Sprinters get it. They used to run 4x400y. Now they run 4x400 meters. No sprinter would be caught dead running in a 4x375.

Write a big enough check and sprinters will run 4x 356.7 feet
