That totally breaks my preconception that athletes in the old days only ran competitively until their early or mid 20s.

This guy was running mid 29s for 10,000m on sub optimal tracks, with sub optimal footwear at age 35 and 6 months in 1949...

I'm pretty sure that not too many Finns in their late 30s are running mid 29s in 2015...

Also another Finn, Ilmari Salminen broke the 10000m WR at 34 in 1937. Only a few months short of 35 too.

I know the post refer to running, current 30k track -age 35.

other WR breakers in the past have been closer to 40 in race walking

After the war they built roads and became fat and lazy as a result. Now all they like to do is ice fishing and ski jumping. No longer a third world country.

They are into cross country skiing, plasma expanders and EPO.

Only Jauhojärvi is any good at skiing anymore, and only because he is from Ylitornio where there are still no roads. Norway is #1 because it is still mostly a wilderness.

I find it unusual that Mo ran sub elite for a few years and then all of a sudden has a breakthrough and starts dominating. Now over 30 sets a world record. What other athletes have run sub par then switched coaches and started breaking records.

Didn't he run 12:57 before he switched over to being coached by Salazar?
