Mo is 31 and will be 32 in one month.
I believe that he might be the oldest man to ever run a world record on the track (indoor or out). Can't think of anybody else that was older when he broke a world record on the track. Maybe somebody else can think of someone.
Will he have a Lagat/Geb like longevity?
Roger Bannister ran a world record and he's 85.
Pretty sure that there are older guys than Bannister that are still alive and broke a world record when they were younger.
But that is obviously not the question...

Not on the track but I think Ed whitlock ran a world record at 74 and at 80.
Eamonn Coghlan set an indoor 2000m record in 1987 at age 34.
Michael Johnson was 3 weeks shy of 32 when he broke the 400 meter world record.
When I read this, I feel that the sub master category (35-39) is kind of ridiculous...
I didn't realize that Johnson was so old when he broke the world record.
Also, the world leader right now at 60m is 38 y.o. and will be 39 y.o. very shortly.
Then you add Lagat, who is 40 and is currently the US leader at 3000m...
Carlos Lopes was 36 or 37 when he broke the pre-race 10,000 meter record, but finished second to Mamede. So he was a not exactly, sorta kinda, but not world record holder.
Geb broke the marathon WR (again) at age 37. How can you people not know this?

The OP asked two different questions by offering the choice of "is" or "was." If you read the question as "who is (present tense) the oldest man who ran (past tense) a world record in the track," then the answer should be the current oldest person who ran a WR in the past.

From the Letsrun experts, it seems that Coghlan's 2000m indoor world record, when he was 34 y and 3 months old is the answer.
