I've just recently seen a few clips of this guy speak, and he seems very knowledgeable, logical, and thoughtful. He's been around a LONG time. Are my first impressions accurate?

Thomas Sowell is one of the most brilliant political minds out there. He would be awesome in democrat circles but he has one great flaw,... he is a conservative!!!!!!!!! He is a MAN who doesn't buy into the poor, black man victimization, Al Sharpton idiocy. Liberals and democrats hate him.
In all seriousness he is an incredibly smart man with some very interesting ideas. He's in a unique place to be able to talk about things that a white man would be ignored or ridiculed for saying. Of course sometimes he just gets mocked or ignored anyways. If you really want to get to know him and his ideas, check out his books.

I have always been baffled that when the USA finally decided to vote in a black president, it came round to voting in a person of dubious background, who was the result of a union between flaky white trash and a bona fide, left wing, full blooded African politician with no connection at all with the USA - instead of a real genuine African/American.
You are right about Thomas Sowell, he would have made an excellent African/American president who could have been accurately described as a black president - Walter E Williams is another.
The guy is an inspiration. His books reward the time it takes to assimilate the large amount of somewhat technical but well-presented information. The resident socialist fools on here might like to get educated on why the conceit of left-wing intellectuals has consistently fvcked up society.
And yes, there's always the Gordon Geckos of the world. Everything can be ripped off, and is, but you can't go past the market economy as the most sensible way to organise commerce and enterprise. The alternative is various forms of interventionist nonsense that never fails to create waste, inefficiency, and burdens the poor disproportionately.
The road to economic hell is paved by the left's good intentions.
Thomas Sowell gets paid to write, yet he's a terrible writer. I have used him for years as an example of poor writing.
It's good that he's a black non-leftist. But he is still an eclectic, and I hate any intellectual who does anything other than consistently defend freedom and capitalism.
Sowell is an intellectual, not a politician.
He's an economist by training and he applies what are really fairly simple economic concepts to analyze current government policies. As an example, raising minimum wage always sounds like a good thing but there is a pretty straightforward explanation of why raising the minimum wage actually CAUSES unemployment and hits poor minorities the hardest. It amazes me Obama of all people is in favor of this: he has to be smart enough to understand the economics, so it must be that he chooses to ignore the economics to pander for votes. Is that what we want our politicians to aspire to? Sowell makes arguments that can't be refuted on his logic or economics, so he gets called a bad writer by the idiot above, or worse things by others. I hope more people try reading some of his stuff.

This is an eloquent expression of my thoughts also. I've now watched about half an hour of videos of him on youtube and haven't yet had any major disagreements with him at all, and I'm typically fairly liberal. Seems like a really frank, honest, person who just says it like it is. I'm eager to read some of his books, but it might be a while.
He's currently 82 years old.
Yeah he's one of my favorite intellectuals. I disagree with him occasionally, but his positions tend to be so well argued that they often lead me to reevaluate my opinion on the issue at hand.

all HS students should be required to read his book 'Basic Economics'..
Sowell is one of those white folks' 'Good Negro',a court jester
whose head they rub for good luck while they call him the N
word behind his back.
Oh, I know you so want that to be true. it would make you happy and justify your personal hate and make al sharpton correct. I grew up with victims like you. Of my four friends that grew up in the projects, myself and one other didn't accept the victim role. He became a dentist and I became a coach then insurance exec. The other 3 still live in the hood taking small jobs complaining about the white man making their sorry lives worse. The only time I heard the word n*gger coming my way was when I was around democrats.
