Best basketball watching experience ever. Was in Durham for business during March Madness. Went to a local Duke sports bar hangout. Got to watch the Dukies lose to Indiana, nothing sweeter than the sound of that silence...
as to why to hate Duke, it's simple. Their hoops team and coach are excellent and they always seem to get the breaks - either from favorable scheduling (when was the last time they played a first round game more than 100 miles from home?), seemingly biased refs, or a lucky bounce in a big game.
Admittedly, it really all boils down to jealousy.
That is an honest answer. However, I would argue about the advantage for Duke playing the 1st round close to home. If you have attended the ACC championships or NCAA first/second rounds in North Carolina, you would know what I'm talking about. The state is packed full of NC State and UNC fans. (Makes sense - state schools that take over 80% of their enrollments from NC. Not to mention, those schools' study bodies dwarf Duke's 6500 undergrads.) A
In other words, Duke fans are vastly outnumbered. Those games are like "away" games against your two big in state rivals in one building.
