I have a 17 year old daughter who until this week has been running 55-58 miles per week since the first week of August. She's a little bigger for a distance kid 5' 8" and 131lbs, very well muscled. Started mid-June with 40 MPW building up to the 55. They race once a week most weeks and do workouts 2 other days a week. Weeks with no races 3 workouts. Started doing workouts at the end of June, but not 3 days a week to start.
Workout are 1000-1200 repeats, mile repeats 4 mile tempo's and etc... They are hard and fasted paced workouts(like 2 mile wu, then 5 1 mile repeats 2 5:55-5:58 pace 3 minute recovery and 2 mile cd) She's had only a couple of Sunday's off since June.
She had any early season race a 4K at 14:38, then a 5K at 18:59(on a moderate hard course) and seemed to be heading in the right direction, feeling good and strong. Had a week off from racing and had a heavy work load 58 miles 3 workouts. Next week she a tempo workout that went poorly(couldn't shift gears at the end), didn't give much thought until the Saturday race. It was horrible slipped to a 19:55 dead heavy legs and very tired. This past Saturday she raced, easier course and dropped back to 5th on team. She had a mileage drop this week to 35MPW.
First we thought iron issues, ferritin is 84 and 69 on the iron so all good. Did more blood work no other issues everything was very good. She has an excellent diet, fruits, veg., lean protein and healthy carbs. We are thinking over-training. Any thoughts? She is meeting with her coach during a free period at school on Monday. She was hoping to have some ideas to speak with the coach on.
If its over-training what are the solutions? Have a meet this weekend and would like to get heading back in the right direction.
